Tools in the Fish Tote:
Harvesting Cooperatives
December 17, 2004 9AM -5 PM
Urban Forestry Center, Portsmouth, NH
The Northeast Sea Grant Programs invite all interested to learn more
about fish harvesting cooperatives and how they can work for fisheries
in the Northeast. Designed primarily by participants in the fishery,
harvesting cooperatives are market based self-management tools that
support fishing communities and promote improved economic and biological
sustainability.
The workshop will include guest speakers with experience in
co-management and harvesting cooperatives:
Bob Pomeroy - CT Sea Grant Fisheries Extension Specialist,
Sherman Hoyt - ME Sea Grant and Cooperative Extension Fisheries
Specialist,
Joe Sullivan - Seattle attorney, who has done the legal work to
establish all of the harvesting cooperatives on the West Coast,
Teressa Kandianis - co-owner of the Kodiak Fish Company, which
operates boats in the Alaskan Weathervane scallop harvesting
cooperative and in the North Pacific groundfish fishery.
The afternoon session will include the development of a model that
fishing communities can use as a starting point for establishing their
own cooperatives. Lunch will be provided. Please RSVP to Barbara Somers
(401) 874-2012 to reserve a seat.
Directions: From Interstate 95 Northbound/Southbound: take Exit #5 to
the Portsmouth Traffic Circle. From the Circle, take Route 1 Bypass
south. This will merge into Route 1 South. Proceed about 2 miles thru a
series of five lights. At the next set of lights you should be in the
left turn only lane (Yoken's Restaurant will be on your right). Turn
left onto Elwyn Road. Take the first left turn (approximately 500 feet)
into the Urban Forestry Center road to the parking lot.
