      Workshop for Educators:

How Volcanoes Make Life Possible (at the Bottom of the Ocean)

Friday, November 19, 2004 - 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Exhibit Center, Woods Hole, MA

(For complete details, visit http://www.whoi.edu/info/workshop.htm.)

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tectonic forces shaping the Earth's crust create volcanic activity far
beneath the sea surface. Volcanoes erupting on the ocean floor pour
chemicals as well as lava into the sea water. The interaction of rock
and water add substances to sea water that help enable unusual life
forms to exist at the bottom of the sea.

This day-long workshop focuses on the processes related to volcanic
activity at hydrothermal vent sites, and the role of water chemistry in
the maintenance of life without sunlight.

Participants will receive a resource binder and a copy of "Down to a
Sunless Sea," a WHOI supplemental children's science book about
hydrothermal vents. Participants will also take part in a hands-on
activity designed to bring these concepts into the classroom.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The workshop material is geared for the middle and high school level,
but educators (formal & informal) of any level are welcome to attend.
Space is limited to 30 participants. Certificates for PDPs will be awarded.

The registration fee is $40. Please make checks payable to WHOI. (Sorry,
no purchase orders or credit cards.) Mail your check to Stephanie
Murphy, WHOI MS #16, Woods Hole, MA 02543. The deadline for registration
is November 15, 2004.

If you have questions, contact: Stephanie Murphy, samurphy at whoi.edu,
508-289-2271, or Kate Madin, kmadin at whoi.edu, 508-289-3639.
