Fish and Fishing by the Numbers
A course for math and science teachers of grades 7-10
Time: Saturday, January 29, 2005 9:00-5:00 and Sunday January 30 10:00-4:00
Place: Chatham and Falmouth, Cape Cod
This class will highlight math connections using fish and fishing topics.
Day 1: Fish dissection; populations; local species; fishing gear;
economics of fishing; discussions with fishermen; visit Chatham Fish Pier
Day 2: Estuaries and fish; nautical charts; resources for teaching; salt
marsh exploration
Participants may choose to stay overnight at Waquoit Bay Reserve for a
fee of $12.00
Course is free. Graduate credit available from Framingham State College

Oceans and Coasts in the Classroom
A course for Teachers of Grades 6-10
Come learn how you can teach math and science using ocean and coastal
topics. We will use Massachusetts frameworks as we introduce engaging
content and activities from tracking plankton blooms to using nautical
charts. Many resources and materials will be distributed. Instructors
are Pat Harcourt, WBNERR, and Anne Smrcina, Stellwagen Bank National
Marine Sanctuary
Time: Thursdays, March and April 2005 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm and field
trip on date TBD.
Place: Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary headquarters, 175

March 3: Introduction to oceans and coasts

March 31: The Gulf of Maine, our local ocean
