What effects does space flight have on the body? How do plants grow in
space? What precautions must we take when going to other planets, and
when bringing samples back to Earth? A hands-on workshop for high
school and community college teachers addressing these and other
questions will be held at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods
Hole, Massachusetts. The workshop will provide participants with
content knowledge in several areas of active research in astrobiology
and the space life sciences, including human physiology in space,
agriculture in space, and issues of planetary protection and microbial
contamination of spacecraft. In addition to lectures from life science
researchers, considerable time will be spent engaged in hands-on
activities which use low cost and easily available materials.
Participants will also be introduced to available NASA educational
resources. Dormitory housing and food will be provided for all
participants during the duration of the workshop. Documentation for
purposes of awarding PDPs will be given.
