MERI Announces Educator Position Available April 2003
Education Program Coordinator
The Marine Environmental Research Institute (MERI) is recruiting for the
position of Education Program Coordinator to provide educational
services and outreach programs at its Center for Marine Studies in Blue
Hill, Maine. MERI is a non-profit organization that conducts scientific
research and provides education on the impacts of pollution on marine
life. The job will involve implementing and expanding existing education
programs, supervising education interns and volunteers, creating and
publishing educational resource materials, training teachers, attending
meetings and conferences, and articulating and promoting MERIs mission
to the public.
Located in the mid-coast region of Maine, MERI offers a diverse range of
education programs to promote awareness and stewardship of marine life
and the ocean habitat. Programs include naturalist-guided Eco-Tours for
adults, Island Field Trips for children, water quality monitoring, beach
walks and shoreline cleanups, special ocean lectures, and marine science
programs for schools.
Duties will include but not be limited to:
(1) coordinating educational programs including summer Eco-Tours,
childrens Island Field Trips, and year-round programs at the Center;
(2) supervising student interns and volunteers; (3) building community
relationships through outreach programs, events, lectures and courses;
(4) working with design staff to produce educational displays and
materials including graphic displays, posters, videos, and fact sheets;
(5) supervising maintenance of the Ocean Room saltwater aquariums; (6)
operating the Sea Lending Library and Eco-Store; (7) teaching marine
science programs in area schools, training teachers in marine science
curricula (8) developing resource materials and products such as teacher
training kits (9) working with MERIs development staff to write
educational program grants; (10) assisting with special mailings and
fundraising events; (11) representing MERI at local, state and national
meetings and conferences, presenting educational workshops; and (12)
performing other duties assigned by the Director.
The successful candidate will have broad-based experience in science
education, program management and implementation, teacher training, and
community outreach, with some background in grant-writing, public
relations, and educational publishing. The candidate will be able to
coordinate and implement MERIs existing education programs as well as
contribute to education program development. The candidate will possess
excellent academic, personal and communication skills. Applicants must
possess the ability to adapt to a changing work environment, and be
available to work nights, weekends, and some holidays, especially during
busy summer months. The Education Program Coordinator will be expected
to stay current with progress in the field and to collaborate and
cooperate with other marine educators regionally and nationally.
Minimum requirements to be successful in this position are: An interest
in the marine environment that is consistent with the MERI mission; and
demonstrated computer, writing, and presentation skills. An MA/MSc in
marine sciences, environmental sciences, biology, zoology, or similar
major with 2+ years of teaching experience and 3+ years supervisory
experience, or a BA/BSc with 2+ years teaching experience and 5+ years
supervisory experience is preferred. Knowledge of computer software
including Microsoft Word, Power Point, Adobe Photoshop, Quark, Excel,
SPSS, and GIS a plus. Must possess a valid drivers license, good driving
record and be comfortable handling small boats in marine waters. Must
have knowledge of First Aid, CPR, and boating safety.

Time Requirements: Full-time (40-50 hours/week) with possible extra
hours during summer and flexible hours in winter.
Salary: Competitive, DOE
