The Wells Reserve is still accepting applications for several summer 
positions including Environmental Camp Coordinator, Environmental 
Educator, Research Assistant, and Plankton and Water Quality Monitoring.

GENERAL INFO ABOUT THE WELLS RESERVE:
The Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve. located in southern 
Maine, is one of 25 Reserves nationwide that is overseen by the National 
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The Wells Reserve is 
committed to investigating coastal environments and increasing 
understanding of their ecological importance. The site encompasses 1600 
acres along the southern coast of Maine. The Visitor Center, offices and 
laboratory are housed in restored turn-of-the century buildings that 
were originally part of a saltwater farm saved from development by our 
non-profit agency, Laudholm Trust. Seven miles of trails take the 
visitor through the diverse habitats of the Reserve, home to a variety 
of wildlife including many endangered species.

ENVIRONMENTAL CAMP COORDINATOR
Full time; June 9 to August 22 (start and end dates slightly flexible)
The camp coordinator will be responsible for the development, 
implementation, and management of the Junior Researchers Program and the 
Advanced Junior Researchers Program summer day camp for children ages 
9-13. This involves training and supervising two high school assistant 
counselors. In addition, she/he will assist with other Education 
Department programs or tasks as needed.
Pay: $2500 to $3000 plus free community housing

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATOR
24 hours per week; June 9 to August 29 (start and end dates flexible)
This position is responsible for developing and leading environmental 
education programs for children and families. Just for Kids is a series 
of half day programs for children ages 6-9. Family Explorations are two 
hour nature programs for families. Both of these programs allow visitors 
to explore the various habitats of the Wells Reserve through fun, 
hands-on activities. This position will also be responsible for 
developing 1 outreach program and assisting with other education 
programs including our summer day camp and group programs as needed.
Pay: $1900 to $2200

RESEARCH ASSISTANT
Full time June to August (start and end dates flexible)
The employee will be involved with a number of salt marsh research 
projects including fish and invertebrate sampling, food web analyses 
using stable isotopes, salt marsh panne documentation, water quality 
analyses, and habitat mapping using GPS (Global Positioning System) and 
GIS (Geographic Information System) technology. Field work, lab work, 
and data entry are all part of this position.
Pay: $2500 to $3000 plus free community housing

PLANKTON AND WATER QUALITY MONITORING
8-10 hours per week; mid-May through August (applicants that cant start 
until June will be considered)
The intern will conduct bi-weekly plankton tows and water quality 
sampling from two estuarine sites on Reserve property. Job duties 
include identifying plankton collected, entering data into a 
spreadsheet, compiling a species list, reporting toxic phytoplankton 
species to the Dept. of Marine Resources, microscopic slide preparation, 
assisting with developing a plankton workshop for volunteers, assisting 
with a half day program for children, and creating an educational 
display for the project. The intern will also collect bi-monthly water 
quality samples from the Reserves estuaries for the Dept. of Marine 
Resources.
Pay: A stipend of $400 to $700
