2002-2003 Coastal Solutions Forum
Gerry E. Studds/Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary
The Center for Coastal Studies (CCS) will hold a forum on the Gerry E.
Studds/Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary on November 13 at the
Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay.
[Reception 5 to 7 p.m. Forum begins at 7 p.m.]
Five PDP credits are available for educators. This is a great
opportunity for teachers to share the wonder of science with their
students; we encourage high school ‘field trips.’
University students and their professors are strongly encouraged to attend!
The forum, entitled “Defining Stellwagen,” is the first in the 2002-2003
Coastal Solutions Forum series and is free and open to the public.
Pre-registration is required for all attendees, and that’s easily done
by calling CCS at the numbers below.
Distinguished panelists will identify the resources and concerns of
Stellwagen Bank as the federal government updates its guidelines on the
management of its marine sanctuary. Invited panelists include: Peter
Baker, campaign director of the Cape Cod Commercial Hook Fishermen’s
Association; Joanne Jarzobski, CCS whale watch education coordinator;
Anthony Chatwin of the Conservation Law Foundation; Captain James F.
Murray, commander, Coast Guard Group Woods Hole; Craig MacDonald,
superintendent, Gerry E. Studds/Stellwagen Bank National Marine
Sanctuary; Frank Mirarchi, a Scituate fisherman; Gib Chase, a wildlife
biologist with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
CCS Executive Director Peter Borrelli will moderate the forum.
The Gerry E. Studds/Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary was
designated in 1992 because of its remarkable biological, geological,
oceanographic and cultural features. Protecting 842-square miles, the
sanctuary stretches between Cape Cod and Cape Ann at the mouth of
Massachusetts Bay and is home to a wide variety of marine mammals,
including the endangered humpback whale and northern right whale,
seabirds, fishes and invertebrates. The sanctuary is undergoing a
management plan review process, to ensure that it continues to best
conserve, protect and enhance its living and cultural resources.
The Center for Coastal Studies is a private, non-profit organization
dedicated to the research, public education, and conservation of the
marine and coastal environments.
The forum is part of CCS’s Coastal Solutions Initiative, a program
designed to merge science and public policy. Future topics in the forum
series include the Boston Sewage Outfall Pipe, United States Coast Guard
funding and marine mammal viewing regulations.
