SHOREBIRD SPECIALIST JOB DESCRIPTION:

Title: Seasonal Natural Resource Officer/ Shorebird Specialist

Definition:

- Technical work assessing and monitoring shorebird nesting activity at 
Sandy Neck and associated sites. Recommends and implements specific 
management practices to safeguard the Town's interests in managing 
endangered and threatened species.

- Provide detailed information about environmental processes and 
resource management at Sandy Neck.

- Assist Natural Resource Division with functions at other locations 
within the town, other duties as necessary.

Supervision:

- Required to act independently in remote field locations.
 
- Responsible for advising full time Natural Resource staff on issues 
impacting the Town's compliance with shorebird protection mandates from 
local, state, and federal agencies.

Job Environment:

- Required to work a variety of shifts, many of which will begin before 
seven a.m.

- REQUIRED TO WORK ALL WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS THROUGHOUT TERM OF EMPLOYMENT.

- Employee will be subjected to extremes of weather including exposure 
to wind, precipitation, and tidal influx in a remote coastal setting.

- Work venue contains all hazards associated with both and terrestrial 
and coastal marine environments.

Essential Functions:

- Employee's primary responsibility entails the observation of Piping 
Plover shorebirds on Sandy Neck and the documentation and tracking of 
their reproductive activities.

- Use of four wheel drive trucks and A.T.V.s to access remote nesting 
locations.

- Duties require frequent contact and interaction with members of the 
public requiring patience, excellent communication skills, and tact.

- Informs the public about science and management concepts, to provide 
context for any necessary restrictions on visitor activities.

- Represents and promotes the interests, goals, and policies of the Town 
of Barnstable and Sandy Neck when dealing with the public.

- Participates in, and may be responsible for, the following operations: 
shorebird censoring, public education and interpretive programs, off 
road vehicle operations, first aid and emergency care, traffic control 
and management, and endangered species protection.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications:

- High School graduation with college level coursework biology, wildlife 
management, ecology, or related field.

- Experience in shorebird protection efforts, resource management, 
security, or nature education is preferred.

- Certification in First Aid and C.P.R. required; L.G.T., First 
Responder, Wilderness, or other advanced medical certification preferred.

- Must possess valid license for operating motor vehicles in Massachusetts.

Necessary Knowledge, Ability, and Skill:

- Knowledgeable of the principles of and biological processes, wildlife 
management, population dynamics and resource management.

- Employee must effectively communicate knowledge to individuals from 
various age groups, educational levels, and backgrounds.

- Must be skilled in the operation of All Terrain Vehicles (A.T.V.s) 
over varied terrain.

- Cognizant of legal ramifications of endangered species legislation, 
property ownership, public lands, and medical liability and able to 
protect the town's interest in this regard.

- Able to assess complex situations under pressure, and to deal with 
caustic people in an appropriate manner.

- May be required to wear issued uniform and associated equipment. 
Employee must maintain uniforms and equipment to high professional 
standards.

Physical Requirements:

- Employee must be able to function well during extremes of temperature 
and weather.

- Extreme physical exertion associated with responsibilities in the 
field including rescues, emergency response, facilities maintenance, 
vehicle management, and wildlife and lands management activities.

- Physically able to place protective fencing at nest sites and to 
maneuver a 600 lb. A.T.V.

Mental/Emotional Requirements:
 
- Self confident and able to act in accordance with commonly held 
principles of sound judgment.

- Must interact with members of the public in an appropriate manner 
exercising independent judgment, self confidence, and tact.

- Resistant to being drawn into confrontational situations, and able to 
exercise authority in a prudent and patently impartial manner.

- Resilient and self motivated; capable of focusing on long term 
departmental goals despite potential short term setbacks.
                                                                                                                                            
 
- Dependable under pressure and equally comfortable working in a fast 
paced, stressful, retail environment or autonomously in remote 
wilderness regions having both terrestrial and aquatic components.
