The University of Maine
Job Announcement
Title: Marine Extension Associate for Community
Development
The Sea Grant Program at the University of Maine
seeks an experienced
professional for the position of Marine Extension
Associate. This is a
full-time, soft money professional with one year of
funding . The position
will be a member of the Maine Sea Grant Marine
Extension Team and will have
primary responsibility for coordinating the Coastal
Community Development
Initiative. This initiative will convene working
groups to define coastal
ecosystem health as it applies to the types of
nearshore ecosystems around
the Gulf of Maine. The effort will also involve
identification of
biological, physical and chemical metrics for the
evaluation of health
status for these types of ecosystems and will
identify the current
monitoring and research programs in the state of
Maine that measure these
indicators. Work will include researching other
similar efforts around the
United States, collecting regulatory materials to
gain an understanding of
the needs for this type of monitoring, and
synthesizing the findings into a
report that relates human activities in the coastal
zone with these measures
in order to predict and prevent adverse ecological
impact. The report will
be made available to coastal decision makers,
particularly municipal
officials. Salary range is $28,000 - $32,000.
Qualifications: B.S. in marine ecology, zoology,
marine biology,
aquaculture, mariculture, or related field
required. Significant
experience in community development, applied science
or policy work is
preferred, as well as experience as an outreach
educator in these or related
areas. Strong organizational skills are required,
as is computer
proficiency and strong written and oral
communication skills. The ability to
travel extensively, normally requiring a valid Maine
driver’s license, is
required. For a full job description see the Maine
