LECTURE TONIGHT
The Coalition for Buzzards Bay and the Buttonwood
Park Zoo announce the final presentation of The
Coalition’s Winter Lecture Series on Wednesday,
March 28, at 7:00 p.m., in the Zoo’s new Education
Center in New Bedford. Shellfish Aquaculture in
Buzzards Bay: Bay Scallops and Oysters, will be
presented by Seth Garfield and Dale Leavitt
Bay Scallops and Oysters have historically been an
important part of the commercial and recreational
shell fisheries in Buzzards Bay. These traditional
fisheries are now being augmented by a blend of
modern science and technology. Sites such as West
End Pond in Cuttyhunk and Taylor’s Point in Bourne
are now teeming with these farm-raised shellfish.
Learn about these endeavors and the future of
scallop and oyster aquaculture in our region.
Seth Garfield, Coalition for Buzzards Bay staff
member, has been cultivating oysters as the owner of
Cuttyhunk Shellfish Farms for 20 years. Dale
Leavitt is employed jointly by Cape Cod Cooperative
Extension and Woods Hole Sea Grant. He is also the
Technical Coordinator for the SouthEastern
Massachusetts Aquaculture Center (SEMAC) located at
the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
The Winter Lecture Series is open to the public.
Admission is free for all Coalition for Buzzards Bay
members and is $3 per lecture for non-members.
Refreshments will be served. Please call The
Coalition for Buzzards Bay, 999-6363, for directions
