The annual New Year's Day walk and "toast to the coast" celebration in Woods
Hole will take place on Tuesday, January 1, starting at noon in front of the
Woods Hole Community Hall on Water Street. All people are invited to this
saltwater celebration.
The New Year's Day revels will begin with a festive parade around Eel Pond.
Bring holiday noisemakers, rainbow banners, musical instruments, and
costumes. At Waterfront Park on Water Street, merrymakers will pause to
"toast the coast" with non-alcoholic beverages. We will promise to do our
best, in the seasons ahead, to protect our coastal environment and our
historic community. There will be opportunities to share poetry, songs, and
favorite readings appropriate for the occasion. Afterwards, the group will
retreat into the old firehouse for a holiday party with cookies, brownies,
and other snacks. Environmental and community groups will have the
opportunity to display literature and to discuss plans for the new year.
The year 2002 marks the 400th anniversary of the Gosnold voyage to Cape Cod.
According to local legend, the Gosnold expedition inspired William
Shakespeare's play "The Tempest." Once again, characters from "The Tempest"
will lead the Woods Hole parade. Prospero, the scientist and wizard, will be
present with his daughter Miranda. (Last year, several girls came in Miranda
costumes. So the parade may have several Mirandas.)
The New Year's Day walk in Woods Hole is co-sponsored by the Falmouth League
of Women Voters, the Sierra Club's Cape Cod Group, the Dance Vision Festival,
and the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Falmouth. All people invited.
Everything is free. For additional information, call Robert Murphy at (508)
540-8384.
