Greetings!
Join WHOI Sea Grant for its 12th annual series of lectures entitled
"Oceans Alive: Plain Talk on Current Topics in Marine Science Presented
for the General Public." The talks are free of charge and are designed
to inform and involve the general public in relevant and timely marine
science issues. This year's series will feature the following
presentations:
Tuesday, April 25
"Young Scientists Present: Winning High School Projects"
Local high school students from Falmouth High School and Falmouth
Academy will present their winning science fair projects.
Tuesday, May 2
"Blue Eyes and Blue Water: A Giant Bay Scallop Invades Falmouth"
Bob Rocha, Education Coordinator for The Coalition for Buzzards Bay,
will help us get an up close and personal look at one of the most unique
(and tasty!) residents of Buzzards Bay: the bay scallop. This
presentation, designed for families, will offer bay scallop facts --
including information about their life cycle, feeding behavior, and
mobility. The featured attraction will be the Coalition's
two-and-a-half-foot diameter dissectible model of a bay scallop.
Give-aways and fun for all ages!
Tuesday, May 9
"New England Fisheries at a Crossroads: Achieving Sustainability"
New England offshore fisheries have undergone considerable restructuring
in the wake of overfishing and restrictive management measures designed
to address the situation. In particular, groundfish and scallop
fisheries have become heavily regulated with restrictions on where,
when, and how much fishers can fish. In this presentation, Steve
Murawski, Chief, Population Dynamics, National Marine Fisheries Service,
will explore reasons for stepped-up regulation, measures enacted to
rehabilitate depleted stocks, and responses of the stocks to these
measures. A prognosis for the fisheries will also be discussed.
All presentations begin at 7:00 p.m. in Redfield Auditorium, Water
Street, Woods Hole (parking is available in the lot opposite the
auditorium). For more information, contact WHOI Sea Grant at (508)
289-2398 or seagrant@whoi.edu.
