NYFO a great place to work! Incredible colleagues! New York State an amazingly beautiful and diverse state! And the Finger Lakes where Cortland resides, oh, so fabulous -- beautiful lakes, great boating and fishing, fabulous State and county parks and hiking (Google the Finger Lakes Trail), clear waters for swimming on long sunny summer days, wineries, breathtakingly beautiful fall foliage, farms, orchards, skiing of all sorts, snowshoeing, winter wonderlands, world class universities and all the cultural opportunities they offer. Four amazing seasons each with its own delights!
Come join us!
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service New York Ecological Services Field Office seeks a contaminants biologist with expertise in environmental assessment, ecotoxicology, and restoration to join our team. Position responsibilities include providing technical assistance to Great Lakes Areas of Concern (AOCs) and conducting natural resource damages assessment and restoration (NRDAR) activities throughout New York state. The ideal candidate is an excellent communicator and well organized, can work both cooperatively and independently, and is a creative problem-solver. The successful applicant will work with and maintain relationships with Great Lakes AOC committees and the USEPA and apply expertise to address Beneficial Use Impairment removals and AOC de-listings. Duties will also include managing NRDAR cases currently in active assessment, restoration, or restoration monitoring. The position requires working with others to assess injuries to natural resources from hazardous substances and oil, pursue NRDAR cases under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act and the Oil Pollution Act, and plan and oversee restoration projects to address those injuries.

About the New York Ecological Services Field Office: Our Office is comprised of talented and dedicated staff working to conserve, protect, enhance, and restore the fish, wildlife, and plant resources within New York State. Our staff are highly trained and experts at working with at risk and endangered species, providing technical assistance related to conservation planning and renewable energy, environmental contaminants and NRDAR, as well as conducting cutting edge aquatic research, environmental restoration, and community outreach and education. New York is an incredibly environmentally diverse state: the dynamic Atlantic and Great Lakes coastlines and watersheds, the mountains of the Adirondack and Catskill regions, the rolling hills, valleys, and lakes of the Finger Lakes region, the lake plains of the western region, forest and rivers of the Allegheny highlands, and the great rivers. With such a unique variety of habitat comes great biodiversity and the need to protect it. Our staff works closely with individual landowners as well as local, state, and federal governments, Indigenous Tribes and Nations, and non-governmental organizations to achieve mutually agreeable conservation
outcomes.
