JOB: Project Scientist, plankton ecosystem modeling

JAMSTEC plans to recruit ONE staff for full-time fixed-term contract
position as Project Scientist to engage in research and development as
part of the project "Developing a new ecosystem model to represent the
adaptive capacity of plankton ecosystems in the North Pacific", which
was funded by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) within the
research area "Establishment of core technology for the preservation and
regeneration of marine biodiversity and ecosystems" of the Core Research
for Evolutional Science and Technology (CREST) Program.

Job Description:

This is an exciting opportunity which provides ample resources for
someone interested in developing novel models of adaptive response and
biodiversity in planktonic ecosystems.

This project aims to develop new and efficient models of the dynamics of
phytoplankton and zooplankton communities, considering their
interactions with each other and with the physical environment. The
concept of optimality (as a result of natural selection) subject to
ecophysiological trade-offs will be central to the modeling approach.
The successful candidate will conduct research into how to efficiently
represent the biodiversity and associated adaptive capacity (i.e.,
flexible response) of plankton communities in the ocean, using numerical
models of various scales from 0-dimensional (box) models of processes to
coupled 3-dimensional ecosystem models embedded within physical models
of the ocean (particularly the North Pacific). This will include
developing such models and validating them against observations
utilizing a database to be compiled as part of this project.

For more about the research please see the webpage of the Principal
Investigator for this research project, S. Lan Smith:

Salary:
Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)
e.g. Scientist: JPY 5,700,000-6,000,000

Terms of Employment:
1) On appointment, the successful candidate will receive a relocation
allowance in accordance with the bylaws of JAMSTEC.
2) An allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
3) The employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance
and labor insurance in the proportion specified by current statute.
4) A housing lease service available in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaw.
5) Holidays and vacations: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end
and New Year's holidays. Annual vacations with pay, special vacations,
leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are
provided.
6) Others: Various subsidies are provided from the JAMSTEC employee
cooperative for mutual aid and welfare services.

Closing Date: April 14, 2014
