PLYMOUTH MARINE LABORATORY (PML) is currently aiming to fill 3 vacancies
across a range of EO disciplines. If you know of colleagues looking for
a job in a rather picturesque part of the UK, then please pass on the
info below. Graham Quartly

*Marine Earth Observation Scientists (x3)*
*Location:*Plymouth Marine Laboratory, UK
*Salary Range*: £29,228 - £34,581
Reference Number: PML17927
Closing Date: *05 Sep. 2014**
*Full time, Open Ended Appointments
*Purpose of the Roles:*
Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) is looking to appoint three Earth
Observation Scientists to work on a number of European Space Agency
(ESA), European Commission (EC) and Natural Environment Research Council
(NERC) funded projects. If successful you will undertake research and
development focussing on Earth observation in physical oceanography and
will include one or more of the following key deliverables.
*Key Deliverables:*
·Study seasonal/interannual variability of shelf-edge physical processes
using SST/ocean colour/altimetry, integrating EO data on fronts/SST with
in situ glider/drifter data (e.g. for estimates of diffusivity and slope
current meanders, towards synergy results).
·Develop innovative retracking algorithms to recover accurate sea
surface information from radar altimeter echoes, and critically evaluate
their performance.
·Couple bio-optical and upper-ocean physics models. Activities will
involve: the use of ocean-colour satellite data to compute
spectrally-resolved light penetration in the photic layer; impact of
changes in light penetration on water-column stability and heating in
the upper-ocean mixed layer; and consequent effects on mixing,
mixed-layer depth and air-sea exchange of heat. Coupling the light model
to primary-production models is also desired.
·Collaborate with the ocean-colour remote-sensing group and the
ecosystem modelling group at PML to explore ways in which ocean-colour
data can be used to improve marine ecosystem models in the context of
climate change and of perturbations in forcing fields (e.g., volcanic
eruptions, inter-annual oscillations, extreme events), and to explore
the use of ocean-colour data to assess the skill in ecosystem models.
Some experience in working with marine biogeochemical models and models
of light field underwater is desirable as is an interest in coupled
biogeochemical-physical-optical processes and air-sea exchanges of
energy and materials (e.g., carbon, DMS).
·Estimate surface currents from EO data by extending Maximum Cross
Correlation software to incorporate rotations, process optical and
thermal imagery (GOCI/AVHRR) for the Korean region, validate using in
situ/altimeter/drifter currents, presentation at a meeting with Korean
partners, and then moving on to combine current information from
altimetry and optical data.
*Experience & Eligibility:*
·You will either have a PhD, or equivalent level experience, in a
numerate discipline.
·Familiarity with mathematical concepts appropriate for quantitative
remote sensing.
·You must possess proven experience and skills in computer programming
such as C, Python, or IDL preferably in a Linux environment.
·You will have proven experience in EO data processing and handling;
marine sciences or biogeochemistry; or ocean colour remote sensing. For
one post experience in working with marine biogeochemical models and
models of light field underwater is desirable
·You must be able to demonstrate and apply time and priority management
principles to good effect.
·You will be expected to interact and collaborate with colleagues across
the group and the organization.
