UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SANTA CRUZ INSTITUTE OF MARINE SCIENCES NOAA/NMFS CoastWatch Coordinator

The Institute of Marine Sciences<http://ims.ucsc.edu/> at the University of California, Santa Cruz, in collaboration with Dr. Steven Bograd, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Services, seek a NOAA CoastWatch West Coast Node Coordinator to oversee the production and supervision of satellite-based products and services provided by NOAA. The position is at the NOAA/SWFSC laboratory. The incumbent will initiate projects and partnerships; analyze results, and summarize them in the form of reports, refereed journal publications and/or meeting presentations and seminars. Responsibilities include ensuring the timely reception of existing data streams and production of standard products; assisting clients through open access to the suite of satellite oceanographic data assembled by NOAA for use in physical, biological, and fisheries oceanography research and for developing satellite-derived products in support of U.S. west coast users that include NOAA line offices (e.g., NMFS, NOS & OAR), Regional Associations of the Integrated Ocean Observing System (RA/IOOS), the California Current Integrated Ecosystem Assessment (IEA), and the California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI).

RANK: Associate to Full Specialist

SALARY: Minimum salary $50,820, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree or equivalent degree in Oceanography, Earth Sciences, Environmental Studies, Engineering, or Computer Science; two years’ experience working with oceanographic satellite data.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience developing and leading research analyses; experience with analytical tools and data management of massive data sets (“big data”) to provide higher levels of interpretive information useful for environmental analysis and oceanographic application.Knowledge of relevant HDF4, HDF5, NetCDF3 and NetCDF4 file formats; knowledge of processing Level 2 satellite data to Level 3 data and forming composite imagery; knowledge of UNIX shell scripting, Matlab, GMT, the CoastWatch tools, and NASA SeaDAS software; knowledge of R statistical software.

POSITION AVAILABLE:    As early as May 1, 2014 (negotiable).
