1. Research Chair, Dalhousie University
Halifax, Nova Scotia
The Marine Affairs Program (MAP) of the Faculty of Science at Dalhousie
University invites applications for a Social Sciences and Humanities
Research Council (SSHRC) Canada Research Chair Tier 2 in Integrated
Coastal and Ocean Management. It is anticipated that the appointment
will be tenure-stream and made at the Assistant Professor level. Details
about the CRC program are available at: http://www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/.
The concept of Integrated Coastal and Ocean Management (ICOM), codified
at the Earth Summit in Rio in 1992, addresses the pressures being placed
upon the world's most productive and fragile littoral zones. It responds
to the growing societal demands to develop solutions that maximize the
economic opportunities available from coastal ecosystems while
minimizing the conflicts that arise due to the multiple array of users
and uses of these resources. This area of research contributes to
bridging the significant gap between natural and social scientific
knowledge in the coastal and ocean environment. It also focuses on the
policy-making process that results in decisions affecting how the
multitude of users of the coastal zone interacts with each other and
with the available ecosystem goods and services.
The position for a SSHRC CRC Tier 2 in Integrated Coastal and Ocean
Management in MAP supports Dalhousie University’s strategic focus in
ocean-related interdisciplinary research and contributes to furthering
Dalhousie’s position as Canada’s most comprehensive Oceans University.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to advance knowledge
in this field and to collaborate with world- renown coastal and marine
scholars from some six Faculties within the university, as well as with
businesses, government and civil society partners involved in coastal
and ocean management.

9. Marine Geophysicist, British Antarctic Survey
Cambridge, England
Within the IceSheets programme at BAS a particular focus of current
research is on understanding ice sheet change during the late
Quaternary. Working mainly around West Antarctica, we aim to determine
the extent of the glacial maximum ice sheet, its retreat history and
what evidence there is for late Quaternary ice sheet collapse. Future
aims include closer interaction with glacial modellers to integrate
results with palaeo-ice sheet models.
To help us in this work we would now like to recruit a suitably
qualified marine geophysicist for an open-ended post to collect, process
and interpret multibeam echo sounding data and acoustic sub-bottom
profiles from polar continental shelves, slopes and deep ocean basins.
The post will also involve work on existing seismic reflection data, and
assisting with the collection and analysis of sediment cores. The
successful applicant will become a member of a team based in Cambridge
and will participate in Antarctic research cruises that will involve
absences from the UK of approximately one to two months. He/she will be
expected to integrate results from a range of geophysical and other data
to interpret past glacial and sedimentary processes, the sequence of
events during deglaciation, and how these changes affected sediment
delivery to the deep ocean. There will also be opportunities to work
with glacial geophysicists to study subglacial processes through
integration of oversnow results that provide information about modern
subglacial environments with offshore data that provide information
about comparable past environments.
