The Marine and Coastal Programme of the IUCN West and Central Africa - 
MACO is in charge of marine and coastal issues, including biodiversity 
conservation, development and management of marine protected areas and 
their networks, fisheries management, marine spatial planning, 
integrated management and governance of coastal areas, environmental 
responsibility of economic actors, adaptation to climate change and 
disasters risks reduction. The MACO has been developed on the basis of 
different experiences developed by IUCN in Central and West Africa, 
including its regional wetlands Programme and the Regional Coastal and 
Marine Conservation Programme in West Africa PRCM (www.prcmarine.org 
<http://www.prcmarine.org/>).

The IUCN Regional Marine and Coastal Programme Coordinator reports 
directly to the Regional Programme Coordinator for West and Central 
Africa, and functionally to the Head of IUCN’s Global Marine Programme. 
He/she will serve as both a senior member of the Regional Programme 
committee that delivers the technical programme of IUCN in Central and 
West Africa and the IUCN global Marine Programme team that helps set 
strategic direction and define priorities for IUCN’s broader engagement 
on Marine and Coastal issues.

The MACO Coordinator will develop, resource, and manage IUCN’s Marine 
programme activities in the region in close collaboration with other 
relevant IUCN programmes, Members, Commissions and partners. He/she will 
be responsible for the overall management of MACO activities, ensuring 
that they are coherent and consistent with IUCN’s “one programme” 
approach, build on and align with IUCN’s Marine and coastal conservation 
framework and add value to regionally and nationally defined priorities.

This is an exciting opportunity for the right person to work closely 
with Rare’s Global Programs and the Fish Forever Science Team to provide 
monitoring and technical support for the Fish Forever program. The 
Associate will be responsible for helping to guide fisheries science, 
assessment models, technical discussions on metrics and monitoring 
methods, interpret incoming data, and communicate results to a variety 
of audiences within Rare and externally. The successful candidate will 
have overall responsibility in the following 3 areas.


Provide support for Rare experts and Fish Forever partners in the 
development of fisheries science:

·Review, synthesize, and make recommendations on data collection, 
analysis, and interpretation from technical experts for the Fish Forever 
science team;

·Coordinate communications between and amongst fisheries monitoring 
experts in Rare’s regional offices; and

·Act as a liaison between Rare and fisheries and TURF experts in the 
Fish Forever partner organizations (EDF and UCSB)

Develop and manage metrics and monitoring programs:

·Critically evaluate Fish Forever methods, metrics, and monitoring 
techniques; provide recommendations for the alignment of all of the 
above across Fish Forever and Rare’s Theory of Change; and

·Track the impact of Rare and Fish Forever’s marine programs and develop 
long-term metrics for existing marine and Fish Forever programs.

Communication within Rare and to external audiences:

·Serve as a resource for Rare staff on marine and fisheries science;

·Draft reports synthesizing the status of Fish Forever metrics that 
clearly articulate and communicate Rare’s ongoing research, monitoring, 
and impact assessment;

The 'Fishery Technician I- Tagging Trailer Assistant' is responsible for 
assisting in the maintenance and operation of a mobile Autofish Tagging 
Trailer. Previous experience working in and operating an automated fish 
tagging trailer, and experience tagging fish in a hatchery setting is 
desirable. Trailer Assistants perform the manual fin clipping and 
coded-wire tagging on juvenile salmon and steelhead. Assistants also 
assist with trailer setup and tear down as well as cleaning the trailers.

Work schedules vary depending on each hatchery and double shifts are 
frequently used so work days may start at 5:00 am until 2:00 p.m. or 
3:00 p.m. or 2:00 p.m. until 11:30 p.m. Work weeks are typically Monday 
through Friday and most hatcheries require travel status. Hotel and per 
diem is paid for by the employee and reimbursed through expense claims 
paid by PSMFC.

Participate in a crew that will monitor the emigration of juvenile 
Chinook salmon and Steelhead trout using rotary screw traps on the lower 
American River.  Make standardized observations including but not 
limited to species identification, assessing life stage and run for 
salmonids, fork length, and marks.  Collect environmental data including 
but not limited to weather, turbidity, water temperature, and water 
velocity.  Maintain and clean field equipment and boats.  Summarize and 
input biological or habitat data on field data sheets accurately and 
legibly. QA/QC data collected on field data sheets.  Adheres to all 
safety and data collection protocols.  Must be willing to work in 
inclement weather.  Working weekends and overtime may be mandatory.

Hourly Lab Tech 1 MaST, Highline Community College

Des Moines, WA

The MaST Center is the marine laboratory for Highline Community College 
and is used for Highline and community classes, research, and other 
activities. It is located in Redondo which is about 10 minutes south of 
the main campus and is halfway between Seattle and Tacoma. The facility 
has approximately 3,000 gallons of flow-through aquariums and houses 
over 100 species of marine life from the Puget Sound. The MaST Center is 
open every Saturday to the public during its Water Weekends and hosts 
over 10,000 visitors annually. Weekend programs also include the Science 
on the Sound, a once a month speaker series and the Live Dive program 
where divers using a video camera and two-way communication take the 
public on an underwater tour of the Redondo dive site which is home to 
lots of animals and is a reserve for Giant Pacific Octopus. During the 
rest of the week, the MaST Center is used for Highline classes, school 
groups, and other activities. The MaST’s Marine Mammal Stranding Team 
works actively to protect marine mammals that have stranded on local 
beaches.

The Marine Science & Technology (MaST) Center Hourly Lab Technician 1 
reports to the Chair of the Pure and Applied Science Division and is 
supervised by the Manager of the MaST Center. Under general supervision, 
the incumbent will assist the Manager in support of the day to day 
operation of the MaST Center and is part of a team of staff, interns, 
and volunteers. The Hourly Lab Technician 1’s responsibilities will 
focus on the running of the MaST aquariums, including life support, 
maintenance of the plumbing systems, animal husbandry and providing 
coverage when the manager is away from the center.

This is an hourly, part time position, working a maximum of 16 hours per 
week. This position is not eligible for benefits.
