1. American Samoa MPA Network Coordinator, Coral Reef Advisory Group

The Marine Protected Area Network Specialist will build-upon and assist 
the managed marine network areas as well as implement sections of the 
American Samoa Marine Protected Area Network Strategy (MPA Network 
Strategy).

The MPA Network Strategy was developed to link MPA programs and agencies 
together to be more effective and efficient given each programs 
mandates, resources and funding through enhanced on-the-ground 
implementation, integration of education, research and monitoring, 
enforcement, and program administration. The goal of the MPA Network 
Strategy is to enhance existing MPAs and to develop a network of MPAs to 
ensure the long-term health and sustainable use of the Territory’s coral 
reef resources. The MPA Network Strategy includes capacity building and 
training programs and performance measures that monitor the progress and 
success of the network, and will also serve to facilitate, support and 
enhance the designation and management of no-take MPAs that will protect 
20% of the Territory’s coral reef ecosystems. Additionally, the MPA 
Coordinator will work with the CRAG Coordinator to jointly coordinate 
the efforts of the MPA Network to contribute to the ongoing Two Samoas 
Initiative.

3. Post-Doc/Research Associate, Climate and Ecosystem Response, Oregon

Research position within a NOAA-sponsored cooperative institute working 
jointly with university and NOAA collaborators to quantify and assess 
how climate variability and change might impact the Northern California 
Current Large Marine Ecosystem (NCCLME) and to assess the potential for 
future changes in ecosystem structure.  Physical climate changes of 
concern include: increased variability in climate forcing associated 
with the PDO, the North Pacific Gyre Oscillation, and the ENSO, and 
possible changes in transport and the types of water that feed the 
NCCLME. Responsibilities: Collate and analyze existing, extensive 
physical and biological datasets collected in northern California 
Current by NWFSC and collaborators. Analyze how physical changes 
propagate throughout the food chain and affect single species (e.g., 
albatross), particular taxa (e.g., zooplankton), guilds, and communities 
(e.g., ichthyoplankton). The scope of this position will include 
development and publication of at least one peer-reviewed manuscript, 
presentation of results at scientific meetings, database management and 
querying, statistical analyses, and simulation modeling.

4. Marine Program Coordinator, Congo Basin Coast

Reports on a day-to-day basis to the Gabon Country Program Director 
(CPD) with additional reporting to the Director, Marine Conservation 
(MD) of WCS in New York.

Position Description: For 25 years, WCS has been leading conservation in 
Central Africa and has recently expanded this mission to the waters of 
the Congo Basin Coast'seawards of Congo and Gabon. WCS' conservation 
efforts include targeted species interventions on cetaceans, sea 
turtles, and West African manatees, support for a network of marine and 
coastal protected areas and mitigation of challenges such as fisheries 
throughout the region. WCS also provides technical support to government 
partners throughout the region, assisting them in their efforts to 
promote marine conservation. Principle responsibilities include the 
coordination of the combined coastal activities of WCS in the region,

The policy internship is designed to further professional development

14. 2013 MATE/UNOLS Six-Month Internship
R/V Thompson at the University of Washington and the R/V Kilo Moana at 
the University of Hawaii

This winter/summer (early January – June 2014), the MATE Center and the 
University National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) fleet will 
sponsor one marine technical internship onboard two research vessels: 
R/V Thompson and R/V Kilo Moana (http://www.unols.org/info/vessels.htm).

Interns will work with marine technicians on shore and at sea, learning 
how to operate and maintain a variety of scientific and navigational 
equipment in support of shipboard scientific research. The internship 
will begin in Apia, Western Samoa, on the R/V Thompson.  The exact 
schedule through June will be determined before the acceptance date, but 
will involve work on the R/V Thompson and the R/V Kilo Moana.  
Internship projects will be dependent on the funded science but previous 
interns have worked on projects ranging from chemical oceanography, 
marine biology, GIS/bathymetric surveys (seafloor mapping), geological 
studies, work with ROVs and much more! The position will last 6 months, 
and students will receive a stipend of $500 per week, reimbursement for 
travel expenses, and on station housing while ashore.

The Smithsonian Marine Ecosystems Exhibit is a truly unique public 
aquarium. Located in the St. Lucie County Aquarium on South Hutchinson 
Island in Fort Pierce, Florida, the Ecosystems Exhibit is an outreach 
facility of the world-renowned Smithsonian Institution's marine research 
center, The Smithsonian Marine Station. As an intern at the Exhibit, you 
can be part of an innovative live exhibit philosophy called ecosystem 
modelling. More than just fish tanks, our displays are as close as you 
can get to experiencing the natural world without strapping on fins.

The primary role of the Husbandry Intern is to assist with the daily 
maintenance of the fishes, invertebrates and systems associated with our 
ecosystem aquariums. This includes monitoring environmental conditions 
and water chemistry, preparing daily diets, conducting routine system 
maintenance and collecting specimens for display. Learning objectives 
for the intern include how to maintain saltwater life support systems,

16. Sea Otter Research and Conservation-Research Intern, Monterey Bay

The Monterey Bay Aquarium's Sea Otter Research and Conservation program 
is seeking enthusiastic and motivated individuals to assist staff with 
field observations and data collection of wild sea otters in the 
Monterey Peninsula, Elkhorn Slough and Moss Landing areas of coastal 
California.

Project responsibilities include, but are not limited to, data 
collection in the field from shore and on a small boat using radio 
telemetry equipment and making visual observations with spotting scopes. 
Interns will record re-sights, movement patterns, and foraging and

people who are excited to get elbow deep in algae, knee deep in a 
tidepool and share their knowledge and love of the natural world with 
youth through our hands-on outdoor education program.

Naturalist positions at Camp Ocean Pines are full-time seasonal, with 
hours scheduled according to group attendance and duties assigned by the 
Program Director. Naturalists report to the OE Program Director.

Naturalists teach science to visiting 2nd through 12th grade students in

Description: The CIEE Tropical Marine Ecology and Conservation program 
is a study abroad program for undergraduate students that is located in 
Bonaire (Southern Caribbean) and lasts a total of 15 weeks.The Coral 
Reef Ecology Intern will assist in program delivery, academics, 
research, group dynamics, logistics, dive safety, student 
transportation, and site security at the CIEE Research Station.The 
position is a combination of teaching assistant, research assistant and 
resident hall assistant.Duties include assisting with: preparations for 
classes and labs as instructed by faculty; teaching; SCUBA diving in 
support of CIEE courses and long-term research projects; mentoring 
students; general errands at the research station; and record keeping 
for the dive safety program. The internship is a 17 week commitment with 
little down time and the normal work schedule includes weekend and 
evening duties.CIEE interns are on call 24 hours per day, 7 days per 
week for the duration of the internship.

Minimum Qualifications: BA/BS in Biology with an emphasis in Marine 
Biology/Ecology or Biological Oceanography (MS preferred); scientific 
diving experience (minimum of 50 dives logged).

Requirements: Current certifications in First Aid, CPR, DAN Oxygen 
Rescue, Advanced Open Water are required; DAN insurance, a comprehensive 
dive physical; valid driver's license

Abilities/Skills: Knowledge of Caribbean coral reef species; a 
commitment to education and research in coral reef ecology and 
conservation; a willingness to work flexible hours, live on site and 
manage undergraduate students in residence at the station; the ability 
to work as a team member with CIEE staff to motivate students and 
provide an excellent academic and personal growth experience for students

Compensation: A small stipend, round trip airfare (up to $850), and 
lodging will be provided to the successful applicant.
