Executive Director, Gulf States Marine Fisheries Commission

Ocean Springs, MS

The Gulf States Marine Fisheries Commission is looking for a dynamic,
visionary leader to help guide it toward continuing growth and success.
The Commission was formed in 1949, by state legislative action and is
authorized by the U.S. Congress through P.L. 88-61. Those legislative
actions resulted in the establishment of a compact, which is a treaty
among states, in this case including Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi,
Alabama and Florida. The purpose of organization is to provide an
administrative vehicle/to promote the better utilization of the
fisheries, marine, shell and anadromous, of the seaboard of the Gulf of
Mexico, by the development of a joint program for the promotion and
protection of such fisheries and the prevention of the physical waste of
the fisheries from any cause./

Over the three decades the Commission has experienced outstanding growth
and achievement, resulting in successful fisheries conservation and
management as well as a stronger partnership among the state members of
the Commission. Many challenges remain, however, including but not
limited to: the growing uncertainty of the federal budget, the
Commission’s soon-to-be-outdated vision statement, and the states’
collective responses to recent and pending ESA listings. The Commission
seeks a strong leader with excellent partnership-building, resource
conservation and management, and administrative skills.

This position is organizationally within the Gulf States Marine
Fisheries Commission (GSMFC) and receives guidance and review from the
GSMFC Commissioners. It is to function as the Executive Director for the
GSMFC. This position is fundamentally the Chief Executive Officer of the
Commission, with full responsibility for the Commission's programs. This
includes member state relations, strategic planning and implementation,
staff organization and administration, fiscal management, and outreach
and representation (particularly with member states, Congress, and the
Administration). The position is located at the Gulf States Marine
Fisheries Commission office in Ocean Springs, Mississippi.

Physical Oceanographer, British Antarctic Society

Cambridge, UK

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment
Research Council, aims to undertake a world-class programme of
scientific research, and to sustain for the UK an active and influential
regional presence and a leadership role in Antarctic affairs.

We are looking to appoint a Physical Oceanographer to a senior post
within the Open Oceans group at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). The
focus of the Open Oceans group is on improving the understanding of the
circulation, mixing, dynamics and Earth System feedbacks in the polar
oceans, using a combination of theoretical, observational and numerical
analysis techniques, and assessing the implications for the global
climate. The group interacts closely with the Shelf Seas group at BAS,
which is focused on investigating ice and continental shelf processes,
and well as with other groups in BAS focused on study of the atmosphere,
cryosphere and ecosystems.

Ongoing research interests of the Open Oceans group include:
investigating mixing processes in the Southern Ocean and the Arctic
Ocean at the mesoscale and submesoscale and dynamical interactions
influencing the oceanic overturning ciruculation; assessing the
representation of the coupled Southern Hemisphere system and of key
Arctic teleconnections in climate models; monitoring and understanding
the production and export of bottom water from the Antarctic continent
into the Atlantic Ocean; monitoring the meridional overturning
circulation in the South Atlantic; mapping the pathways of carbon uptake
by the Southern Ocean; and understanding the physical controls on the
interdisciplinary marine environment in the Scotia Sea and at the
Antarctic peninsula.

Postdoctoral position, University of Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh, PA

Join an *exciting project* at the interface of molecular genetics,
protein biochemistry, comparative immunology, and marine biology.

*The Nicotra Lab* seeks a postdoctoral associate to work on the
molecular basis of invertebrate allorecognition. Allorecognition is the
ability to distinguish between one’s own tissues and those of other
members of one’s species via cell-cell contact. Colonial invertebrates
like corals, marine sponges, and sea anemones use allorecognition to
determine whether they will coexist or compete with each other. In all
species studied to date, allorecognition is controlled by genetic
systems with levels of allelic polymorphism equal to or exceeding that
found at the vertebrate MHC and plant self-incompatibility loci.

The significance of allorecognition spans multiple fields. The
protein-protein interactions that enable allorecognition specificity are
an intriguing puzzle to cell biologists. The mechanisms that generate and
maintain extreme allelic polymorphism are of interest to population
geneticists and molecular evolutionists. And, finally, comparative
immunologists and transplant biologists have long wondered whether
invertebrate allorecognition systems are homologous to elements of the
vertebrate immune system.

Our lab is poised to answer these questions. We have discovered two genes
controlling allorecognition in a cnidarian, the hydroid *Hydractinia*.
We are now working to understand how the proteins they encode create
specificity and signal to regulate the allorecognition response.
Successful candidates need a solid background in molecular biology.
Previous experience working with proteins is a plus. The work will
involve the production of recombinant proteins, in vitro cell culture
experiments, and in vivo work with transgenic animals. You do not need
to have worked with hydroids before?we will teach you what you need to
know. The position is available immediately. Salary support is available
for up to three years on
a newly funded NSF grant. Pay is commensurate with experience and will
follow NIH guidelines.

Our lab is part of the Thomas E. Starzl Transplant Institute in the
*University of Pittsburgh* School of Medicine. We are broadly interested
in recognition phenomena, and specifically focused on invertebrate
allorecognition and vertebrate transplant biology. We interact routinely
with faculty in the departments across the biological sciences.

Prospective candidates can contact Matt Nicotra via email
(nicotraml at upmc.edu <mailto:nicotraml at upmc.edu>) with a cover letter,
CV, and the names of at least two references. More details on the lab
and our projects can be found at www.nicotralab.org
