SEASONAL SEA TURTLE FIELD TECHNICIAN, Little Cumberland Island Sea
Turtle Project
Little Cumberland Island, GA
The Little Cumberland Sea Turtle Project was started in 1964. It is one
of the oldest and longest running Loggerhead turtle projects in the
world. Our research is primarily a long-term population study and, until
2010, was based on night patrols and saturation tagging of nesting
females. Now, under Georgia DNR directive, we no longer patrol at night
in order to protect nesting shorebirds, but continue “tagging” using a
genetic sample from each nest. Although we are an independent project,
we work closely with the Georgia DNR and conduct our project under their
permit.
This is a seasonal position lasting 22 weeks. Surveys are conducted
every day at dawn, including weekends. There is opportunity for days off
with advance notice, though we anticipate the tech will be onsite during
peak-nesting season, late June to early August.
