5. Officer, Global Tuna Conservation, Pew Charitable Trust

Washington, DC

Pew’s Global Tuna Conservation Campaign works to ensure a future for the
world’s largest tuna species and the largest tuna fishery. Industrial
fishing vessels place more nets and hooks in the water in their search
for tunas than in any other fishery in the world. These vessels are also
responsible for the incidental catch of massive numbers of sharks,
billfish, turtles, seabirds, and other marine species caught as
collateral damage by these fisheries. Unfortunately, as valuable
migratory species that cross national and international boundaries,
developing the tools to effectively and sustainably manage tuna
fisheries has proven challenging. Pew aims to ensure that in ten years
from now, our work has ended or prevented the overfishing of the 6 major
commercially fished tuna species in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. We
work to achieve this by pushing for strong compliance and enforcement
measures for bluefin tuna in the Atlantic, and precautionary catch
limits for select tuna species in the Pacific, thereby establishing the
legal and regulatory framework to end overfishing on the
water. Simultaneously, we are working for much-needed reforms for the
two major gears used to catch tuna: purse seines with fish aggregating
devices (FADs) and surface longlines.

The Global Tuna Conservation Campaign is one of eight projects that fit
within Pew’s International Ocean Conservation program.

Position Overview:

The Officer, Global Tuna Conservation is responsible for delivering
campaign outcomes across the full campaign portfolio through provision
of strategic leadership on, and implementation of, outreach strategies
and activities. The position reports to the Campaign Director.

It is expected that this position is for a term period through March 31,
2015, with the possibility of an extension pending the success of the
program, funding sources and board decisions on continued support.

**

Position Overview:

The Senior Associate reports to the Director, U.S. Oceans, Southeast and
will work from a home office in Florida. The Senior Associate will lead
science and policy analysis in support of the campaign’s work to protect
forage fish populations in Florida’s coastal waters, and other areas of
the southeast U.S. It is expected that this position is for a term

16. Policy Officer, Transparent Seas Project (Africa), WWF Mozambique

Maputo, Mozambique

The Smart Fishing Initiative (SFI) is a new WWF Programme that strives
to improve marine ecosystem health through making commercial fishing
around the world sustainable. It is helping to generate a new fisheries
paradigm that ensures healthy and productive oceans are recovering and
provide sustainably produced protein to meet seafood demand and
sustainable livelihoods for fishers and fish processors. The overarching
goal of the SFI is to achieve sustainable fisheries through effective
governance, responsible seafood markets, and innovative financial
mechanisms.

SFI’s Transparent Seas Project works globally to make fishing more
transparent and to ensure that the seafood reaching markets is fully
traceable to legal sources by:

Promoting laws and policies to keep the products of illegal, unreported,
or unregulated (IUU) fishing from entering ports or crossing
international borders;

Working with industry towards “business smart” solutions to make all
seafood fully traceable “from bait to plate"; and

Helping fishermen, industry, and governments adopt tracking systems to
monitor fishing activity and document catches.

In Africa, the project is focused in particular on promoting resource
stewardship and securing livelihoods through improved monitoring,
control, and surveillance against IUU fishing, and by facilitating the
connections between responsible fishing activities and profitable
seafood markets.
