20. Fellowship (Sea Turtles), NOAA
Miami, FL
The sea turtle program at the Southeast Fisheries Science Center focuses
on demographic studies, population dynamics, development of quantitative
stock assessment tools, and on fisheries interactions. Development of
population assessment tools that incorporate the best available data and
information into quantitative frameworks are critically needed for
evaluating the impacts of management actions, determining anthropogenic
mortality, and setting future research priorities. We are looking for a
candidate with strong quantitative and computer programming skills that
are interested in developing new methods (analytic tools) for assessing
anthropogenic impacts on protected species, starting with developing
tools specific to sea turtle populations. Experience working with
modeling populations and statistical skills are desirable. The applicant
should be comfortable with working on complex problems with little data
and collaborating with multiple teams pursuing similar goals.

21. Fellowship (Sea Turtle Bycatch), NOAA
Honolulu, HI
The Marine Turtle Assessment Program at NOAA’s Pacific Islands Fisheries
Science Center does in-water and nesting beach research throughout the
Pacific region and is responsible for analysis and assessment of
population status. Our research includes population ecology, climatic
effects, epidemiology, historical ecology, physiology, and life history
and is essentially divided between gathering and analyzing empirical
data relevant for US Endangered Species Act processes, such as
Biological Opinions and Status Reviews. This project focuses on
developing ecosystem indicators for juvenile recruitment and bycatch for
leatherback, hawksbill, green, olive ridley, and loggerhead sea turtles.
The bulk of work will be analyzing a variety of empirical data
streams—including fisheries interactions, satellite tracks, and data
from novel miniaturized biotelemetry devices—to describe the pelagic
habits and habitats of juvenile turtles. The spatiotemporal scale and
variability of such oceanographic factors are influential for sea turtle
population dynamics and forecasting extinction risk. The successful
applicant will possess a range of capabilities in geospatial analysis,
remote-sensing, oceanography, biotelemetry, animal movements, and
quantitative modeling.

from the western and south Pacific. The bulk of the work will be in
developing quantitative tools to understand the abundance and
distribution of insular Pacific sea turtles from these data. There will
be additional opportunities available to collaborate on ongoing
projects, including in-water sea turtle capture/tagging in Hawaii and

About LiMPETS:
LiMPETS is a monitoring program that involves teacher, students, and
local communities, as citizen scientists in a network of long-term data
collection of the sand beach and rocky intertidal communities to
establish a baseline. These citizen scientists gain knowledge about
observing nature and doing science, as well as an appreciation about how
data that can document changes and be used to protect our local marine
ecosystems are gathered. Through this monitoring, these citizen
scientists are establishing a web-linked baseline from which we can
better address current and future impacts. The program, Long-term
Monitoring Program and Experiential Training for Students, or simply the
LiMPETS network, connect teachers, students, and the community to the
ocean, involves them directly in a real scientific endeavor, and
increases their awareness of, and interest in, the marine environment
and scientific processes. The vision of the LiMPETS network is to be
recognized and respected as one of the nation’s premier student-based
citizen science programs.
The LiMPETS network provides authentic, hands-on coastal monitoring
experiences that empower teachers, students, and the community to
conduct real science and become ocean stewards. Teachers participate in
professional development to gain the necessary skills and confidence to
engage their students in meaningful monitoring activities in the field.
Approximately 4,000 teachers and students along the coast of California
are collecting data from rocky intertidal and sandy beach habitats as
part of the LiMPETS network in our National Marine Sanctuaries.

27. Climate Change Planning Advisor, Peace Corps
Fiji
A Peace Corps Response Volunteer is needed to serve as a Climate Change
Planning Advisor for Fiji’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and
International Cooperation. The Ministry’s mission is to develop a
responsible and exemplary Fiji, leading the Pacific in combating climate
change and achieving resilience, while attaining sustainable
development. Climate change constitutes one of the greatest barriers to
sustainable development. It puts Fiji’s biodiversity and ecosystems,
particularly marine and coastal, at risk. This has severe implications
for Fiji’s economic growth, as the country relies heavily on its natural
resources for economic development; fisheries, forestry and agriculture
are its primary industries. The effects of climate change are widespread
and cross-sectoral.
A Climate Change Planning Advisor, with a post graduate degree in
climate change and/or environmental planning/management, is needed to
advise and assist the Climate Change Unit (CCU) in the integration of
appropriate climate change impact response strategies into all aspects
of national, divisional and local development planning processes. The
Volunteer will also assist CCU in the development of resources and
training that will raise civil servant and public awareness around the
topic of climate change vulnerabilities and the need for mitigation and
adaptation actions. In addition, the Climate Change Planning Advisor
will build the capacity of CCU staff and project officers through the
participation in unit activities and training as well as assisting with
the establishment of clearly defined planning and resource allocation
protocols with the four divisional Commissioners and their Divisional
Planning Units. By the end of this project, knowledge and skills should
be transferred to all CCU Project Officers to a point where they are
fully capable of identifying and describing the specific impact of
climate change to all ministries and departments of the government. The
CCU Team should also be able to advise and assist all ministries in the
development of policies and programs that factor in the impact of
climate change.
