Division in Honolulu, HI. This position will be filled under the DOC 
Alternative Personnel System (CAPS).  This system replaced the Federal 
GS pay plan and structure. Under CAPS, positions are classified by 
career, pay plan, and pay band. The ZP-4 is equivalent to the GS-13/14.

Supervisory Wildlife Biologist (MGMT) serves as the PRD Division 
Regulatory Branch Chief, overseeing PIR compliance with protected 
species statutory authorities: Endangered Species Act (ESA), Marine 
Mammal Protection Act (MMPA), and Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and 
serves in a supervisory capacity to staff on the regulatory team.  
Supports ARA with increasing workload, and by organizational and

13. SC Marine Technician, The Nature Conservancy

The Marine Technician will be responsible for assisting the Marine 
Restoration Specialist in site selection, preparing regulatory 
applications and managing volunteers during the oyster reef install 
projects in 2014.  S/he will spend the majority of his/her time in the 
field mapping oyster reef community types and plotting potential sites 
based on criteria presented by TNC staff.  The two oyster reefs projects 
could consist of working with oyster castle blocks, bamboo stakes, 
bagged shell, etc. One project will take place in spring/summer working 
with 40 - 60 volunteers from a local company.

The oyster reef installations will be part of an on-going pilot effort 
TNC is conducting to determine the best methodologies for created oyster 
reefs in South Carolina.  The Intern will also be assisting TNC staff 
with preparing permit exemption documents for the Army Corps of 
Engineers and Department of Health and Environmental Control, including 
a standard application and multiple site drawings (including maps 
created with GIS).  The paid position is for approximately 12 months and 
will average approximately 50 hours a month on the project.

Centre for Ice, Climate and Ecosystems (ICE) at the Norwegian Polar 
Institute (NPI) in Tromsø, Norway invites applications for a permanent 
staff position as a researcher in marine biology with field of research 
in marine algae (ice algae/phytoplankton) and primary production in 
Arctic and Antarctic seas.

ICE’s main objective is to study the effects of changes in oceanographic 
conditions and sea ice and seasonal variations on the ice-associated 
ecosystem. The research in this position will be conducted in icy seas 
around Svalbard, in the Arctic Ocean and in the Southern Ocean. The 
purpose of this position is to increase the knowledge on primary 
producers in polar marine food webs and elucidate how natural and 
anthropogenic changes affect Arctic and Antarctic marine ecosystems. 
Potential research problems will for instance be how changing ice and 
light conditions, stratification and vertical mixing, ocean 
acidification, availability of nutrients or changes in the carbon cycle 
affect primary production, timing of algal blooms, and the 
composition/distribution of ice algae and phytoplankton. The consequence 
of such changes for the ice-associated ecosystem will be a central 
theme. Modelling will also be included in collaboration with our 
ecosystem modellers. As part of the position, one needs to expect annual 
cruises. Within the field of research, it is expected that the applicant 
provides advice to the environmental management section at the institute.

The position will be part of the institute’s marine ecosystems group. 
The researcher needs to collaborate with colleagues in oceanography and 
sea ice geophysics, biogeochemistry and ecosystem modelling, since many 
of the research problems are multidisciplinary in nature. The researcher 
needs to be able to actively develop research within the field of marine 
algae in line with new research problems and needs of the environmental 
management.

The Smithsonian Marine Ecosystems Exhibit in Fort Pierce, Florida is 
located on the Indian River Lagoon (IRL), one of the most diverse 
estuaries in the U.S., and less than one mile from the Atlantic Ocean. 
This unique educational facility provides a window into these underwater 
worlds, offering a variety of hands-on experiences to daily visitors, as 
well as programming opportunities. Our focus is on displaying ecosystems 
as complex communities of organisms interacting in their environments. 
The six main exhibits are models of local Florida ecosystems (seagrass 
bed, mangrove forest, coral reef, etc.) and vary in size from 500 to 
3,000 gallons. The Exhibit also features a touch tank and a variety of 
smaller aquaria and interpretive displays. The Marine Education Aid will 
provide support for educational programs at the Exhibit and in the 
community. This full-time position has a salary of $24,933 with benefits 
and a schedule that includes weekend work.

Duties

The responsibilities of the Marine Education Aid include:

• Teach school programs and lead tours.

• Assist with summer camps for ages 6-14.

• Interpret to visitors in the Exhibit galleries and at the touch tank.

• Assist with developing interpretive tools and signage for the Exhibit.

• Assist Animal Husbandry staff with routine duties such as tank 
monitoring, tank feedings and specimen collections as needed.

Qualifications

The Educational Program Assistant will play an important role in 
assisting the development, building and sales of onboard programs and 
partnerships. The ship is scheduled for completion this spring and the 
next 6 months are critical in creating and establishing relationships 
with educational institutes. OHPRI will begin programs this summer with 
seven 1-week summer camps, the Education Program Assistant will be 
responsible for assisting with the sales, marketing and administrative 
work to fill these weeks. This will involve visiting schools and 
attending camp/college fairs, networking with youth organizations, 
presenting at public events, and increasing public awareness of the 
organization and ship.

Start date: January 2014
Full-time position

This position has the potential to transition into a shipboard position 
once the ship is sailing.

Responsibilities

Developing, marketing and selling summer camp programs, including 
contacting and informing recreation departments, YMCAs, other camps, 
schools, youth travel groups, etc.

Organizing and attending summer camp fairs in the Spring. This will 
likely include weekend work.

Marketing and sales of programs aboard as a remote campus platform to 
schools, universities and other educational groups

Marketing and sales of programs to adult groups, including corporate 
team building.

Environmental Defense Fund is partnered with two other leading national 
environmental groups and a number of local Louisiana groups in a bold 
initiative to restore the Mississippi River Delta (MRD) system. This 
multi-faceted program deals with many challenges associated with 
restoring coastal wetlands on a working coast and aims to restore 
natural system processes to create sustainable communities with improved 
infrastructure and robust economies. A key part of the MRD work is 
advancing new thinking in the restoration and resilience of coastal 
Louisiana by finding answers to key science and engineering challenges.

The intern will have the opportunity to learn about the complexities of 
restoring the Gulf Coast region through the Mississippi River Delta 
Restoration Campaign. The Campaign works with prominent state and 
national environmental organizations, which will provide opportunities

22. Chief Mate (Seasonal), Deep Green Wilderness

Seattle, WA

Duties Include but are not limited to:

Work with the Captain to create and execute lesson plans

Work with Captain and Deckhands to safely operate Orion

Lead and assist with vessel maintenance.

Lead and assist with sailing and navigation based lessons

All typical Chief Mate duties including running the deck underway and 
small boat handling

Working with the students with all tasks and activities: sailing, 
research, cooking, cleaning, games, shore excursions, etc.

Teach lessons to adults and or families during education excursions.

Create new curriculum as needed

Assist with film production underway and while onshore.
