2. Policy Associate, Marine & Freshwater, The Nature Conservancy

The Policy Associate, Marine & Freshwater supports The Nature 
Conservancy's (TNC) conservation goals by serving as a liaison and 
informational contact between The Nature Conservancy’s marine and 
freshwater staff, Congress, and federal agencies – particularly the 
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Army 
Corps of Engineers (USACE). S/he provides research and policy analysis 
in support of TNC legislative and policy priorities at the federal

organize grassroots efforts to mobilize constituents on TNC legislative

The Ocean Health Index is one of the key initiatives of the Global 
Marine Division of Conservation International. Launched in August 2012, 
the Index is a new tool for policy-makers providing an overall 
measurement of ocean health based on scientific analysis of over 100 
global data layers.It is a measurement that couples ocean ecosystem 
health with human needs.The Index scores every country in the world with 
a coastline, in ten key areas or "goals" that humans value or need for 
survival.
We are seeking an intern to help reach out to other marine groups and 
media organizations to increase the audience for the website

stories and monthly newsletter, and amount of social media amplifying 
our stories.  We seek to increase traffic to the website and the number 
of subscribers to our e-bulletin.

In assisting in outreach and marketing, the intern will publicize the 
website and newsletter to targeted universities with marine programs, 
follow up with contributor's organizations to reach out to their 
colleagues, and seek cross-promotional opportunities with marine NGOs 
and other digital media organizations.  The intern will make calls, 
adapt existing stories, and research and write social media posts.There 
is also an opportunity to write an original story for the website.

The intern must be a college junior or senior, or college graduate.  A 
strong interest in conservation, and creativity and knowledge in digital 
communication is key; good writing and speaking skills also required.

Americorps volunteer through the Massachusetts Promise Fellowship.  The 
Fellow will be responsible for developing and coordinating a new 
program, Beach Sister, with school-aged girls at a non-profit center in 
neighboring Lynn, MA.

Fellowship dates: August 2013 through July 2014

Service Description: Since 1967, Northeastern University’s Marine 
Science Center (MSC) has generated outstanding teaching and research in 
the marine sciences. The MSC’s Outreach Program reaches over 5,000 
people per year through various programs and events, and has 
traditionally focused on serving teachers and students in eastern 
Massachusetts. The MSC and Girls Inc. of Lynn have developed the Beach 
Sister program in order to address the needs of youth in the City of 
Lynn by pairing the resources of an informal science education center 
with a community-based organization. The Beach Sister program will help 
pave the way for school-aged girls living in an environmental justice 
community to develop scientific inquiry and citizenship skills, and to 
learn about studies and careers in marine science. The Fellow will be 
responsible for coordinating and implementing the Beach Sister program. 
The Fellow will be tasked with expanding the Peer Leader program for 
teens, developing a more substantial middle school curriculum, providing 
training and capacity-building opportunities for Girls Inc. staff, and 
participating in evaluation efforts. **

Oceanography and Whale Research camp on stunningly beautiful Grand Manan

inspiration and learning abound.

Marine Science/Environmental Science Instructors are responsible for 
facilitating daytime environmental education lessons on land and at sea 
in the following: Whale/Marine Mammal data collection, Marine Mammal 
physiology/ecology, marine science, geology, forest ecology, botany, 
oceanography, coastal / island ecology. Our core curriculum entices the 
seasoned naturalist to develop fun, innovative, educational, and 
meaningful lessons.

activities and skills; familiarity with team building and group dynamics

Whale Camp, located on Grand Manan Island between Maine and Nova Scotia, 
is seeking a highly qualified individual to facilitate the smooth 
operation of all program related activities for campers and staff at our 
residential science, nature, adventure camp. Program includes 
observation and study of whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals, puffins, 
eagles in their natural habitat, hiking, sailing, kayaking, tidal zones 
and the dynamic ecosystem in the mouth of the Bay of Fundy. Specialty 
programs include teacher workshops and family programs.

Job includes overseeing and coordinating the smooth flow of daily 
programming including but not limited to: facilitation of staff 
meetings, design and scheduling of weekly programs, working with staff 
to enhance field teaching skills, curriculum development and revision of 
existing curricular materials, facilitating the implementation of the 
core program, coordinating program between instructors and directors, 
keeping track of the “big picture”, tracking and handling kid issues, 
including safety, and personal growth. Must have strong leadership, 
strong communication skills and organizational background, experience 
with and enthusiasm for working with youth and adults in an outdoor 
setting, ability to motivate others, demonstrated ability to facilitate 
group dynamics and manage staff in an outdoor camp environment. Must be 
flexible, willing to work long hours, creative, patient, have a positive 
attitude, and sense of humor. Environmental or marine science / island 
ecology teaching background is a must as well as demonstrated experience 
in a comparable position. CPR/ First Aid. Room and board provided as 
well as a few whale / sail trips, puffin trips and kayaking excursions.

18. Undergraduate Research Opportunity, FL International University

Key Largo, FL

We seek a highly motivated undergraduate to fill a National Science 
Foundation, Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) position in 
coral reef ecology at Florida International University.

The successful applicant will work with Drs. Deron Burkepile

<http://www2.fiu.edu/%7Edburkepi/Home.html>) and Rebecca Vega Thurber 
(http://microbiology.science.oregonstate.edu/node/182) to conduct 
experiments on nutrient exposure and coral disease dynamics in the 
Florida Keys.

This position is for an undergraduate student interested in pursuing a 
career or graduate studies in Marine Sciences. The successful candidate 
will live and work on Key Largo in the Florida Keys and gain basic field 
and laboratory research skills in coral reef ecology and microbiology. 
The primary responsibility of the student will be to conduct experiments 
on how nutrient enrichment affects coral disease states and progression 
rates, and coral bleaching. There will be ample opportunities to 
participate in other projects studying herbivore foraging behavior, 
coral predation, and nutrient dynamics on coral reefs.

Eligibility: Undergraduates in their junior and senior years with 
interests in biology, microbiology, and environmental sciences are 
invited to apply. Students cannot have graduated at the time of the 
fellowship. Participants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of 
the U.S. and its possessions. Minorities and underrepresented students 
are especially
encouraged to apply.

Qualifications: Applicants should have a classroom/laboratory background 
in ecology and marine biology. Experience working on coral reefs and/or 
with microbiological techniques is preferred. Applicants *MUST* be 
certified SCUBA divers with at least 20 logged dives. Certification with 
the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) is necessary before 
field work begins.

This REU position runs June 3-August 23, 2013. A stipend of $5,500 will 
be provided to the student for the 12-week full-time program. In 
addition, the student will be provided housing at no cost. Students from 
outside the South Florida area also may apply for travel funds assistance.

This position is funded by the National Science Foundation Biological 
Oceanography Program.

state-of-the-art facility focused on sea turtle rehabilitation, research 
and education.  The GSTC is located on beautiful Jekyll Island, a 
barrier island along Georgia’s southeast coast.  The GSTC includes an 
Interactive exhibit gallery, a viewing window into the veterinary care 
area, an elevated walkway though the rehabilitation pavilion and a gift 
shop.  Visitors take a self-guided tour through the Center, which is 
enhanced by daily educational programs.  We offer in-house and outreach 
programs to schools, tour groups and community organizations, and 
represent the GSTC at various environmental events.

Position Description: The GSTC Education Member essential functions will 
include, but are not limited to:

·Working in the exhibit gallery as exhibit Interpreters, assisting 
visitors with the various exhibit stations, providing supplemental 
information on the life history and behaviors of sea turtles

·Conducting daily programs for the public in the Center

·Leading classroom programs for school groups of all ages

·Giving presentations and tours and answering visitor questions on the 
rehabilitation pavilion walkway

·Assisting with and conducting outreach programs for people of all ages,

The Assistant Educator will primarily be responsible for staffing and 
assisting in the management of the Bay Coalition’s Buzzards Bay

22. Assistant Coordinator - Baywatchers Monitoring Program, Buzzards Bay 
Coalition

The Assistant Coordinator is responsible for helping to coordinate the 
bay-wide, volunteer Baywatchers Monitoring Program and additional 
watershed natural resource monitoring programs (stream flow, anadromous 
fish, etc.). The Assistant Coordinator position is a combination of 
fieldwork, lab work, working with citizen volunteers, and data entry.

This part-time, seasonal position is from May to August and reports 
directly to the Buzzards Bay Coalition’s Director of Monitoring 
Programs. The schedule is variable and averages 25-30 hours per week for 
this position.
