Senior Economic Advisor (1-2 year), NOAA

NOAA seeks to fill the responsibilities previously held by the Chief 
Economist with a  Senior Economic Advisor.  The position is designed as 
an IPA (Inter-governmental Personnel Act), which is a 1 to 2 year 
posting arranged with the person’s home institution (academia, 
government or possibly non-profit) similar to a sabbatical. The 
position, which will reside in the Office of Program Planning and 
Integration, will  represent NOAA in high level departmental and 
inter-agency policy discussions that center on economic decisions and 
NOAA management functions. This position will provide intellectual 
leadership, analysis and management expertise to develop, coordinate and 
implement a NOAA-wide Social Science Vision and Strategy. This strategy 
should include an innovative social and economic science research agenda 
designed to address emerging issues and serve NOAA’s goals of climate 
adaptation and mitigation, resilient coastal communities and economies,

Senior Manager/Director, Choose Clean Water Coalition

Annapolis, MD

The Choose Clean Water Coalition seeks a Senior Manager to lead the 
Coalition’s regional work to protect the Chesapeake Bay and all the 
rivers and streams flowing to it.  This position will be responsible for 
coordinating campaign activities on multiple levels with over 200 
organizations in the Chesapeake Bay watershed which includes Maryland, 
Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, West Virginia, New York and the 
District of Columbia. Specifically, the Coalition Senior Manager will 
focus on planning and development of grassroots/grasstops outreach, 
political strategy, federal policy analysis, lobbying, media outreach, 
organizing of conferences and workshops, research, writing and 
fundraising. Additionally, the Coalition Senior Manager is responsible 
for managing 2-3 staff, contractors and supporting the work of the 
Coalition’s Steering Committee, its governing body.
Principal duties include ensuring all aspects of the Coalition’s 
campaigns (local, regional, national) are integrated, working with the 
Coalition's Steering Committee and staff to develop annual priorities 
and workplans and implementing the Coalition’s three-year strategic 
plan.  Meeting with partner organizations to build relationships and 
leveraging work being completed throughout the region are key components 
of the position.  Other duties include fundraising for the continuation 
and expansion of the Coalition’s efforts.
The position is based out of the National Wildlife Federation’s office 
in Annapolis, Maryland. National Wildlife Federation acts as the fiscal 
and staffing agent of the Choose Clean Water Coalition.

Executive Director, US All Islands Coral Reef Committee Secretariat

education and experience in coral reef policy and ecology to support the 
United States All Islands Coral Reef Committee (AIC) Secretariat office 
in Honolulu, Hawaii. OAI conducts research, offers policy advice, and

The AIC is comprised of the Points of Contact (POCs) from its seven U.S.

Senior Associate, Northeast Forage Fish Conservation Campaign, Pew 
Charitable Trusts

Conserving abundant populations of forage fish species is necessary to 
ensure the long-term health and productivity of marine ecosystems.  
Accordingly, the campaign will promote a precautionary, ecosystem-based 
approach to the management of northeastern U.S. forage species.  The 
Senior Policy Associate will conduct technical and policy research and 
analysis to support the Northeast forage fish conservation work of Pew 
and help to communicate the results to the general public, fishery 
stakeholders and policymakers by drafting testimony, correspondence, 
policy statements, white papers, and reports.  The Senior Associate will 
engage with policy-makers and other stakeholders and represent Pew at 
the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council, Atlantic States Marine 
Fisheries Commission, associated advisory panels and scientific 
committees, and with state and federal agencies.  This person will 
report to the Manager for Northeast Forage Fish Conservation**and work 
from Pew’s D.C. office. It is expected that this position is for a term 
period through September 31, 2013, pending the success of the program, 
funding sources and board decisions on continued support.

A time limited lecturer position in environmental conservation is 
available in the Department of Environmental Studies at the University 
of North Carolina Wilmington. Start date is August 15, 2013 for a full 
time, one academic year position. The position will be responsible for 
developing and teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in 
conservation and related areas, as well as supporting the current 
environmental studies curriculum. The preferred candidate’s teaching 
would address aspects of environmental conservation issues in one or 
more southeastern U.S. ecosystems and complement existing expertise in 
the department. The successful candidate must have a minimum of a 
Master’s degree or equivalent in environmental science, conservation 
biology, ecology, or related discipline, have a strong commitment to 
teaching, and be able to work in an interdisciplinary academic context. 
Teaching duties include introductory courses as well as upper division 
conservation courses, and additional upper level and graduate courses 
developed in his or her area of expertise.

series of eight roundtables that included over 2,000 aquaculture 
producers, retailers, NGOs, scientists and other important stakeholders 
within the aquaculture industry. Together, the group developed 
measurable and performance-based standards for responsibly farmed 
seafood. In 2009, WWF co-founded the Aquaculture Stewardship Council 
(ASC) with the Dutch Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH) to manage the 
global standards and certification programs. In addition, WWF helps 
governments design policies that support responsible aquaculture and 
encourages financial institutions to place sustainability filters on 
their investments with the aquaculture industry.

WWF seeks a Vice President, Aquaculture who will be responsible for 
overall strategy development and implementation for WWF-US’ aquaculture 
work, building and managing a cross-functional, international team 
working towards a common vision and objectives, and successfully 
fundraise for and communicate our overall aquaculture efforts. The VP 
will oversee and coordinate with a handful of WWF staff in key 
aquaculture production regions, such as Asia and Latin America. In 
addition, the VP will serve as a policy advocate before agencies and

Director of Seafood Engagement for Business and Industry, WWF

World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the world’s leading conservation 
organization, seeks a Director of Seafood Engagement for Business and 
Industry. Under the supervision of the Manager, The Director will 
develop an overarching corporate seafood engagement strategy to target 
the key private sector companies most important for WWF’s priority 
seafood species and work with them to create demand for sustainable 
seafood (both aquaculture and wild caught). This strategy will both 
build on and identify key gaps in the work that WWF-US has undertaken to 
date with major buyers regarding the purchase of MSC and ASC certified 
seafood with regard to WWF priority species. Special emphasis will be 
given to seafood retailers and brands and subsectors not yet 
incorporated into WWF’s seafood engagement strategy, including hotel 
chains, pet food companies, and other strategic retailers and brands. 
This includes driving integration of new seafood strategic thinking into 
existing WWF partnerships, overseeing relationships with new and 
existing partners, and transmitting WWF’s sustainable seafood message 
with “one voice” (fisheries and aquaculture).

The Director will promote WWF’s work on sustainable seafood through 
engagement with the seafood value chain. The Director will build on, 
complement, and support existing strategies by working with members of 
the Aquaculture and Fisheries teams, Business & Industry, the Market 
Transformation Initiative and the Smart Fisheries Initiative to 
encourage the private sector and its supply chains to support and 
promote fisheries and aquaculture improvement projects (through formal 
FIPs and AIPs) as step-wise approaches to MSC or ASC certification. The 
Director will also work with the WWF-Network to develop and implement 
parallel global seafood engagement strategies with the private sector 
and link more sustainable seafood supplies with US markets. Finally, the 
Director will support, as appropriate, the creation of capacity to 
engage on seafood issues with the private sector in WWF’s priority 
places and in particular in the BRIICs.

Job Description:
This is a temporary, grant-funded technical position that supports Fish 
and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) scientists in managing tabular 
and spatial (GIS) data for research on the Florida manatee and its 
habitat.  The incumbent will specifically work with researchers on a 
project to summarize and analyze water temperature data in relation to 
cold-related manatee mortality.  The main responsibilities for this 
position are entering and verifying tabular and spatial data; assisting 
with the maintenance, quality assurance and quality control of 
databases; developing cartographic products, descriptive statistics, 
graphs, and written summaries for use in reports and presentations and 
for management purposes; assisting with metadata documentation and data 
archival; and locating, retrieving and compiling biological and 
environmental data.  The person in this position will communicate 
technical information to coworkers, while maintaining a professional 
working environment that promotes teamwork within working units and with 
the Marine Mammal Program at FWRI.

Minimum Required Education:
A Bachelor's degree with a major in one of the life or physical sciences.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  *   Knowledge of GIS, relational databases and data management principles.
*   Knowledge of wildlife ecology, biology, or natural systems.
*   Skilled at using a personal computer, preferably including 
experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and ArcGIS.
*   Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability 
to work well independently and as a member of a team.  Qualified 
applicants will need to be organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated 
and adept at problem-solving and time management to succeed in this 
position.


Preferred Experience:

Alaskan Observers, Inc. (AOI) recruits biologists year-round to work as 
Domestic Groundfish Observers in Alaska. We also recruit biologists to 
work as observers in Washington, California, and Oregon. We are in the 
business of helping the government obtain the data necessary to achieve 
a sound management plan for the protection and benefit of future 
fisheries resources in the Bering Sea, North Pacific, and on the West 
Coast.

Position Overview:

Are you looking for a challenging at-sea biology position? Do you want 
to play a critical roll in the conservation and management of fisheries 
resources? Alaskan Observers, Inc. has opportunities on the West 
Coast. Following training in Newport, OR, observers will be required to 
relocate to a port on the West Coast.

Responsibilities:

  * Observers will sample on trawl vessels that range in size from 45 -
    100 feet; trips will generally be 3 to 5 days in length.
  * Observers can expect to be sampling at sea for 12-18 days per month,
    gathering fishing effort and location information, sampling for
    bycatch composition, and collecting biological data from both
    bycatch and target species.
  * When they are not at sea, Observers work on shoreside tasks that
    include making dock rounds, entering and editing data, debriefing,
    performing safety reviews, and contacting vessels to be observed.
  * This is not a 9-5 office job. Observers are on-call, ready to
    respond to vessels.

The College wishes to recruit up to three Associate Research Fellows to 
support the work of Professor Brendan Godley, Dr Annette Broderick and 
Dr Matthew Witt in the UK and overseas. These positions, funded by the 
Darwin Initiative, EU FP7 and NERC, are available immediately for up to 
24 months. The main research focus of the of the posts will be 
Biodiversity Impacts of Marine Renewable Energy in the UK (involving at 
sea biodiversity monitoring) although successful candidates would be 
expected to interface with some of the other research areas of the group 
including Fisheries Bycatch, Marine Acoustics, Spatial Ecology and 
Conservation and Molecular Ecology.

The successful applicant will be able to present information on research 
progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in 
writing and contribute to the preparation of proposals and applications 
to external bodies. Marine fieldwork in the UK a will be required, so 
experience of working at sea would be invaluable.

Applicants will possess a PhD in a relevant discipline (or an MSc and 
extensive experience) and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in 
the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within 
established research programmes. As the group works on international 
projects, languages other than English would be an asset.

Interns to serve aboard our commercial Whale Watch Cruises, which are 
offered in partnership with Boston Harbor Cruises.

Marine Mammal Education & Research Interns are responsible for 
collecting, and transcribing data related to the identification, 
location, and behavior of marine mammals found in the Stellwagen Bank 
National Marine Sanctuary region. Interns are also involved in public 
education aboard the vessels. Additional duties include data entry, 
photo-identification processing, and educational outreach.
