of management tools and likely impacts on socio-economics at local,
national and regional levels. You will have an MSc (or equivalent) in an
area related to coral reef governance and/or marine resources
management, and ideally have experience in scientific support for policy
development. A sound knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research

Post-doc opportunity: Global Reef Expedition - Remote Sensing
Specialist, Nova Southeastern University
Hollywood, FL

I seek to hire an outstanding post-doctoral researcher into my Remote
Sensing and GIS lab (www.nova.edu/~purkis
<http://www.nova.edu/%7Epurkis>) at Nova Southeastern University's
Oceanographic Center.

The project which you will work on is part of a collaboration between
the Purkis lab and the Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation (LOF).
The successful candidate will play a major role in the planning and
execution of remote sensing operations for the LOF Global Reef
Expedition. This ongoing initiative is visiting remote reef sites
throughout the Pacific, Indian Ocean, and Red Sea - see
globalreefexpedition.org. You will join several LOF cruises per year
aboard the M/Y Golden Shadow, a 67-meter logistical support vessel, in
order to collect ground-truth and geophysical data that you will use to
develop high-resolution habitat and bathymetry maps, from Worldview-2
satellite imagery. You will also have the opportunity to address your
own science questions related to this work. The project is exciting
because of its large scale and you will be working with several tens of
thousands of square kilometres of imagery per year. Starting in 2013,
the position will see you visiting little-studied reef sites in the
Pacific, before a shift in focus to the GBR and Coral Sea in 2014, with
subsequent legs of the GRE moving through the Indian Ocean and finishing
in 2016 in the Red Sea. We are looking to develop an exciting collegial
atmosphere with a lot of scientific freedom.

The initial term will be for one year with the potential for renewal
through 2017. The position will be at Nova Southeastern University's
"Center of Excellence for Coral Reef Ecosystems Research" (CoE CRER)
facility (www.nova.edu/ocean/excellence/index.html
<http://www.nova.edu/ocean/excellence/index.html>). This
10,000-square-meter CoE is located at NSU's Oceanographic Center and its
National Coral Reef Institute (NCRI) on the ocean side of Port
Everglades in Hollywood, Florida. Activities in this recently opened
multi-disciplinary research building address national and international
priorities in coral reef research.

Interested potential post-docs should send to purkis at nova.edu
<mailto:purkis at nova.edu>: (1) a curriculum vitae, (2) a few sentences on
research interests and/or possible research projects, and (3) the names
and contact information for three references. Interviews will commence
in November 2012 and will continue until the position is filled.

The candidate will be highly numeric and key factors in our hiring
decisions will be creativity, motivation, productivity, and a record of
successful scientific publication. The domain of your expertise will be
remote sensing, GIS, and marine spatial planning. Nova Southeastern
University is an equal-opportunity employer and does not discriminate
based on race, sex, age, physical condition, or country of national origin.
