relationships with key regional data providers and will work
with a small team of professionals including: the Northeast

<p>Based in the School of Marine Science and Technology, this
is a unique opportunity to use interdisciplinary research
approaches to support effective coral reef management. You
will work on a project which aims to identify major threats
to coral reef health and the most appropriate management
interventions for the UKOTs and governance structures to
support their implementation. Duties will include assessing
the efficacy of management tools and likely impacts on
socio-economics at local, national and regional levels. You
will have an MSc (or equivalent) in an area related to coral
reef governance and/or marine resources management, and
ideally have experience in scientific support for policy
development. A sound knowledge of quantitative and
qualitative research methods with an emphasis on social,
political and institutional arrangements for marine
resources management will be advantageous.. The ability to
work in diverse, sometimes remote overseas working
conditions as an individual or part of a team is essential.

The project which you will work on is part of a
collaboration between the Purkis lab and the Khaled bin
Sultan Living Oceans Foundation (LOF). The successful
candidate will play a major role in the planning and
execution of remote sensing operations for the LOF Global
Reef Expedition. This ongoing initiative is visiting
remote reef sites throughout the Pacific, Indian Ocean,
and Red Sea - see globalreefexpedition.org. You will join
several LOF cruises per year aboard the M/Y Golden Shadow,
a 67-meter logistical support vessel, in order to collect
ground-truth and geophysical data that you will use to
develop high-resolution habitat and bathymetry maps, from
Worldview-2 satellite imagery. You will also have the
opportunity to address your own science questions related
to this work. The project is exciting because of its large
scale and you will be working with several tens of
thousands of square kilometres of imagery per year.
Starting in 2013, the position will see you visiting
little-studied reef sites in the Pacific, before a shift
in focus to the GBR and Coral Sea in 2014, with subsequent
legs of the GRE moving through the Indian Ocean and
finishing in 2016 in the Red Sea. We are looking to
develop an exciting collegial atmosphere with a lot of
scientific freedom.</font></p>

for renewal through 2017. The position will be at Nova
Southeastern University's "Center of Excellence for Coral

education and a bit of web savvy to help revamp the
education section of the website. The project will involve
working through the education section of the Ocean Portal to
improve the descriptions of the lesson plans and resources
provided, as well as to ensure all links and National
Science Standards are up to date and accurate and content is
correctly tagged to topics. The project will also involve
gathering and adding relevant lesson plans and resources to
the system.</p>

<p>The intern will learn web management and technical skills,
including the use of the Drupal open source Content
Management System, and get to put their organizational and
writing skills to use to help science teachers around the
world. As the intern's time and interests allow, he or she
will have the opportunity to write about education and/or

to the vast scientific and educational resources that the
Smithsonian has to offer and will gain experience in how to
use the web as a tool for science education and outreach.</p>

Massachusetts. The intern will primarily assist staff with
boat-based photography of right whales, recording of
behavioral data, and collection of zooplankton samples and
environmental data at stations in Cape Cod Bay. The
successful applicant will also be responsible for a number
of lab-based photo-identification tasks, such as downloading
images, database entry, and matching images to known animals
using an online catalog. He/ she will be required to work a
minimum of four full days per week. The intern will often
collect data independently in the field, thus responsible,
detail-oriented applicants are encouraged to apply.
Fieldwork will likely involve one to two surveys per week,
between January 2 and May 15, 2013. Applicants must be
available for the full field season.</p>
