Post-docs, University of Florida
FL
The Florida Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at the University of Florida is seeking two (2) postdoctoral associates to explore methods for optimal decision making in problems of natural resource management. Research will focus on the application of decision-theoretic approaches to: (1) the control of invasive exotics in South Florida; (2) the adaptive management of waterfowl harvests in the U.S. and northern Europe; and (3) habitat management for the threatened Florida scrub-jay. These projects will support management decisions made by the U.S. Park Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and signatory countries of the African-Eurasian Waterbird Agreement (http://www.unep-aewa.org/about/introduction.htm). Appointees will be responsible for developing ecological models describing the dynamics of relevant system states, optimizing state-dependent management actions, and exploring the sensitivity of optimal management strategies to various sources and degrees of uncertainty. Appointees will be expected to work closely with management agencies, to participate in relevant workshops, to present seminars at various venues, and to publish their research findings in a timely fashion. Some travel is anticipated. No field work is required.

Post-Doctoral Research Fellow (Level B), Environmental Microbiologist/Bio-geochemist, ECU
Australia
Edith Cowan University has received funding under the Commonwealth's Collaborative Research Networks (CRN) Program to build productive research partnerships in the area of 'Protection of Coastal Ecosystems and Marine Resource Management'.
This exciting initiative will enable ECU to work with The University of Western Australia, and a number of overseas partners to further research efforts into two main, and inter-connected, areas: Coastal Connectivity and Eco-hydraulics. As part of the team, we are seeking a highly motivated microbiologist/bio-geochemist to undertake research into the role of microbial communities in marine ecosystems.
Existing research at ECU has focused on understanding the mechanisms that result in connectivity among marine ecosystems, and the significance of that connectivity for key processes such as marine productivity, biodiversity and genetic linkages. The CRN research will specifically focus on the role of microbial communities in the recycling of marine nutrients, including drifting marine macrophytes. Past research has indicted that massive amounts of marine production are exported from reefs and
seagrass meadows as drifting 'wrack'. Large amounts of this wrack are not consumed, suggesting that microbial processes may be critical in recycling this productivity. The post-doctoral research will help to address the fundamental lack of information on the microbial communities in marine ecosystems and their functional importance.
More information on our existing research can be found at http://cmer.ecu.edu.au<http://cmer.ecu.edu.au/> Based in the School of Natural Sciences, the position will be responsible for coordinating and undertaking research in the aquatic microbiology/biogeochemistry area, at least partly through the application of genomic techniques to characterize microbial assemblages and their functional forms. The Research Fellow will play a key role in facilitating the collaboration between ECU and its research partners (The University of WA and Otago University) in the Collaborative Research Network. To that end, the Research Fellow is expected to
work collaboratively with fellow academics in the School, our partners in the CRN and beyond to contribute in the area of applied microbiology /genomics/biogeochemistry and their application to contemporary issues in the management of marine and aquatic ecosystems. The position will work with other researchers in the CRN to establish research directions, obtain external funding, supervise research projects and postgraduate students.
Qualifications
1. Ph.D. in microbiology or a closely related field.
2. SCUBA qualifications (minimum Open Water or equivalent), drivers licence and boat skippers license (restricted Coxswains or equivalent), or willingness to obtain prior to commencement of position.
Experience & Capacities
3. Research experience and knowledge in applied microbiology, genomics and biogeochemistry related to aquatic environments.
4. Experience in conducting field-based research in aquatic environments, involving SCUBA diving and handling of small boat.
5. A record of high quality research in the above fields resulting in publications in high quality international journals.
6. Ability to attract funding through effective liaison with government, industry and the wider community and to manage research projects to completion;
7. Effective organisational and people management skills in relation to the planning, development, implementation, operation and review of research projects and programs.
8. Experience in the planning and implementation of workshops and development of workshop outcomes;
9. Ability to work collaboratively across multiple organizations
10. Experience in the supervision of students undertaking undergraduate projects and/or postgraduate research degrees.
11. A sound understanding of, and ability to work within and contribute to, the health and safety requirements of the workplace, including instruction and supervision of students and staff under your supervision.
Key Accountabilities
1. Initiate and conduct high quality research, including: supervision of higher degrees students; collaborative research with CRN partners and industry; and publications of high quality international journal articles in relevant areas of aquatic microbiology including the application of modern genomic methods to environmental biogeochemistry and foodweb analysis.
2. Maintain close interaction with the CRN research partners, industry and professional bodies, to ensure strong communication among the CRN research partners
3. Ensure delivery of the research outcomes associated with relevant components of the CRN
4. Provide regular reporting to the CRN leaders on the progress of research projects under the Research Fellows supervision.
5. Maintain academic and/or professional standing by engaging in a program of academic/professional activity and development in their area of expertise.
6. Keep abreast of international research trends and outcomes that make significant contributions to the advancement of applied microbiology, genomics, biogeochemistry knowledge and their applications.
7. Comply with occupational health and safety policies and university practices in all aspects of work.
8. Other appropriate duties assigned by the relevant line manager.
Interested applicants should contact Prof. Paul Lavery (+08 6304 3447; p.lavery at ecu.edu.au<mailto:p.lavery at ecu.edu.au>) to discuss the position before submitting an application. Assistant Marine Geologist, British Antarctic Society
Cambridge, UK
The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment Research Council, aims to undertake a world-class programme of scientific research, and to sustain for the UK an active and influential regional presence and a leadership role in Antarctic affairs.
Within the IceSheets programme at BAS a particular focus of current research is on understanding past changes of the Antarctic Ice Sheets during the late Quaternary.
There is a short-term vacancy in the Palaeo-Ice Sheets project for a science student to help us with this work for 12 weeks (09/01/2012-30/03/2012). You will assist marine geologists and work on marine sediment cores from the Antarctic continental margin and the Southern Ocean. The objectives of the Palaeo-Ice Sheets project are to search for evidence for a collapse of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet during the Pleistocene and to determine the extent of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet during the last glacial maximum and to reconstruct its retreat and thinning history. The project also involves marine geophysicists, a terrestrial geomorphologist/geochronologist, and interaction with glaciologists and glacial modellers.
