As part of the team, we are seeking a highly motivated microbiologist/bio-geochemist to undertake research into the role of microbial communities in marine ecosystems.</span><span style='color:black'><o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='margin:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt'><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma","sans-serif";color:#2A2A2A'><br>Existing research at ECU has focused on understanding the mechanisms that result in connectivity among marine ecosystems, and the significance of that connectivity for key processes such as marine productivity, biodiversity and genetic linkages. The CRN research will specifically focus on the role of microbial communities in the recycling of marine nutrients, including drifting marine macrophytes. Past research has indicted that massive amounts of marine production are exported from reefs and<br>seagrass meadows as drifting 'wrack'. Large amounts of this wrack are not consumed, suggesting that microbial processes may be critical in recycling this productivity. Lab work may include ageing fish with otoliths, diet studies, and feeding and care of fish during lab studies.
