The Alabama Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama  is seeking a post-doctoral researcher to develop system models and decision support tools to evaluate habitat management actions to benefit grassland birds population within the range of the East Gulf Coastal Plan.  This is a 12-18 month, limited term non-tenure track position and is funded from external sources.  Continued employment is contingent on availability of funding and satisfactory performance.  Success of this project will result in the development of a framework for decision making about grassland habitat management using spatially link habitat and populations models for species of conservation.  This position will focus on developing methods to reduce ecological uncertainty through data analyses, parameter estimation, and developing models relating habitat management actions to bird population response.   The project may involve Bayesian estimation of demographic rates, simulation modeling, dynamic programming to find optimal policy recommendations, among other research topics.  The position will work closely with the East Gulf Coastal Plains Grassland Bird working group to ensure that research products meet the needs of Fish and Wildlife Partners.

Qualifications:

The minimum qualification is a PhD from an accredited institution in wildlife biology, conservation biology, ecology, biometrics or a related field.  Applicants will be evaluated on their knowledge, experience and abilities in the 3 primary areas of quantitative expertise used in decision analysis: modeling, estimation, and optimization.  The successful applicant will also demonstrate commitment to timely completion of deliverables, commitment to publication of results in peer-reviewed outlets, and strong potential to work collaboratively with multiple agencies on a highly visible research topic. Program Officer - Western Pacific Coastal and Marine Conservation
The David and Lucile Packard Foundation is seeking an exceptional individual to lead its Western Pacific subprogram. The Program Officer will manage a grant budget of $4 million and lead the design and implementation of the subprogram's grantmaking strategy. This position will work closely with grantees to achieve strategic policy and programmatic outcomes in the Western Pacific region. The Annapolis Office of Ducks Unlimited, Inc. has an opening for a Regional Biologist headquartered in Annapolis, MD. The incumbent will become part of a team of biologists, engineers and other professionals responsible for the protection, restoration and enhancement of wetland and associated habitats in the Mid-Atlantic region. Qualifications
Candidates must have at a minimum, a Bachelor of Science degree in a natural resources field. An advanced degree is preferred. A waterfowl biology and wetland ecology emphasis is highly desirable. Applicants must have a basic knowledge of state and federal wetland conservation programs, policies and laws. Duties and Responsibilities
Incumbent's duties and responsibilities include the initiation, coordination and delivery of public and private wetland conservation projects and other conservation activities in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Project initiation includes developing relationships with appropriate public and private landowners and agencies that have current or future potential to establish partnerships with DU to restore and enhance wetlands. Project delivery includes coordinating with landowners, DU engineering staff, contractors and permitting agencies to ensure timely and on-budget delivery of projects. Management of the program budget, negotiation of project agreements, field monitoring and entries related to project tracking through DU's business information system is also required.



The Regional Biologist will write and submit proposals to various funding agencies, foundations and other funding sources to secure project funds and will also be responsible for the administration of these funds. We have an exciting and challenging opportunity for a role facilitating and co-ordinating our work on the Sustainable Seafood Coalition within our Biodiversity team in London working on fisheries and leading on the Sustainable Seafood Coalition.

Project Description: Sustainable Seafood Coalition
ClientEarth has created a partnership of seafood industry stakeholders called the 'Sustainable Seafood Coalition' (SSC). The SSC seeks to ensure that 'all fish and seafood sold in the UK is from sustainable sources'. The SSC proposes to do this through the creation and oversight of a series of voluntary codes of conduct connected with seafood sourcing and consumption, the reduction of discards and creation of a sustainable market for unwanted species, data collection, and the harmonisation of labelling. The SSC will seek to build national and global alliances and influence changes at UK, EU and international level.

The SSC is already operational. It currently has 14 members and industry representatives, including 5 major supermarkets, several seafood brands and suppliers as well as celebrity Chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittinsgstall. The SSC will soon be expanding to the foodservice and fish feed sector to ensure a full cross-industry membership. We will also be expanding the SSC to other EU Member States.

We now need an energetic and effective person with strong facilitation and coordination capabilities to help deliver this vision of sustainable seafood.

The sustainable seafood coalition advisor role
The SSC advisor will play a key role in advancing the work of the Sustainable Seafood Coalition and supporting the biodiversity team's work to secure sustainable and ecosystems based fisheries in the EU.

The candidate will facilitate between members of the SSC (and outside) and act as a coordinator for the SSC, tasked with advancing the coalition membership to include other sectors of the seafood industry in the UK, and developing and implementing a strategy for expanding the coalition into other EU countries. Therefore the candidate must have strong communication and mediating skills, understand the confidential nature of the businesses involved and use their communication (and, if applicable, legal) skills be able to transform working group ideas into concrete proposals for voluntary codes.

Legal qualifications are desirable but not necessary.

Key responsibilities include:
* Interface with UK and other EU seafood industry businesses, Government officials, and NGO's;
* Develop creative strategies to advance the SSC, supported by sound technical expertise and analysis;
* Organise and facilitate working group and member's meetings that result in useful outcomes for the development of the voluntary codes of conduct;
* Provide expert advice and guidance;
* Translate ideas from members and advisors into a workable code of conduct to be presented to the members for amendment, agreement and implementation;
* Represent the SSC externally to the media and at relevant meetings with government officials in the UK and EU;
* Develop funding proposals to progress the work of the SSC;
* Monitor and report on the progress of campaign activities;
* Support and contribute to the activities of colleagues within the Biodiversity programme, particularly by providing analysis, advocacy and contributing to developing strategy.

Qualifications/experience required:
You'll need to demonstrate the skills, qualifications and experience to deliver the vision of the SSC and we will look for the following qualifications and experience:
* A good degree, preferably to Masters level and/or a law degree
* 4+ years professional experience which you could have gained in private, public or non-profit sectors - ideally in the seafood/food and drink business within retail/supply/foodservice, or fisheries or aquaculture industry. You may also have gained relevant experience in other areas such as law, policy, marketing, advocacy or campaigns
* Fisheries and aquaculture science background helpful but not required;
* For candidates with a legal background: knowledge in one or more of the following areas: EU law and institutions, fisheries/marine law, environmental law; commercial law;
* Fluent in English - other languages desirable;
* Ability to travel, as necessary, to European cities.

Resource & Environmental Economist - Pacific Mangrove Initiatives, IUCN

Mangrove ecosystems in the Pacific Islands have been gradually decreasing in area, despite the recognition that they provide many products and services of immeasurable value. They are the first line of defence against many of the effects of climate change and climate related extreme events. On average the Pacific has seen a loss of almost 13% of mangroves across the region over the fifty years. While the specifics may vary between countries, the underlying drivers of mangrove degradation are similar, according to regional mangrove managers and specialists in the Pacific.

In the light of importance of mangrove ecosystems for local livelihood their importance as natural insurance against climate change, IUCN has developed under its Pacific Centre for Environmental Governance a Pacific Mangrove Initiative (PMI). The primary goal of the PMI is to increase resilience to climate change by assisting Pacific Island countries and territories (PICTs) implement sound evidence based policies, plans and practices and targeted capacity development in mangrove management.

Under this Initiative, IUCN has developed the Mangrove EcoSystems for Climate Change Adaptation and Livelihood (MESCAL) Project, funded by the German Government. The primary goal of this € 2.3 million project is to increase resilience to climate change for the people of the Pacific Island countries through adaptive co-management of mangroves and associated ecosystems in Fiji, Vanuatu, Solomon Island, Samoa and Tonga. This is an interdisciplinary applied research and development project aimed at helping countries invest in the management of mangroves and associated ecosystems for improved livelihoods and adaptation to climate change.



SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES: To design and implement Resource and Environmental Economics subcomponent of the PMI project, Mangrove EcoSystems for Climate Change Adaptation and Livelihood (MESCAL).

The Resource and Environmental Economist (REE) will join IUCN's MESCAL Project Management Unit.
The REE will be responsible for design and implementation of the economics subcomponent of the MESCAL project, including undertaking baseline assessment of uses, users and valuation of mangrove ecosystems and associated ecosystem services, the cost and benefit assessment of alternative management strategies, including payment for ecosystem services and rehabilitation of mangrove ecosystems.

DUTIES:
Develop and Implement Resource and Environmental Economics Subcomponent under the MESCAL
More specifically, undertaking the key tasks, including:

•      Liaise with the MESCAL Project Management Unit and National Coordinators (NCs) to develop and implement the economics subcomponent in each of the five countries, including those related to the demonstration site;

•      Assume responsibility for economic considerations in all aspects of MESCAL, particularly in relation to the design and implementation of economic activities at the national level and at the demonstration sites, including baseline assessment of uses, users and valuation of mangrove ecosystems and associated ecosystem services, the cost and benefit assessment of alternative management strategies, payment for ecosystem services and rehabilitation of mangrove ecosystems;

•      Provide support to the MESCAL Project Management Unit and National Coordinators as required, including in the development of Annual Work Plan for the MESCAL Project Management Unit, including annual country work plans in each of the five countries;

•      As required, provide support to National Coordinators in technical and administrative matters relating to economic and other MESCAL activities in country;

•      Facilitate liaison and networking between and among the five country participants, in particular the communities involved in demonstration sites, the private sector, partners, other relevant organisations, non-governmental organisations, key stakeholders and other individuals involved in Project implementation on economic issues associated with strengthening of mangrove ecosystem governance;

•      Promote public awareness of economic values associated with mangrove ecosystems and the relevance of economic approaches to resource allocation necessary for encouraging the use of ecosystem based adaptation to climate change and improved livelihood;

•      Assist with the preparation of progress reports, substantive and operational reports and reviews relating to MESCAL Project implementation;

•      Assist with the preparation and oversight of Terms of Reference for consultants and contractors;

•      Carry out other duties as required by the MESCAL Project Manager from time to time.

•      Maintain linkages with and contribute to IUCN ORO's other programmes as and when required.

Please Note: The above TOR contains the main responsibilities and duties of this position. However in an ever evolving organization such as IUCN staff members are expected to show flexibility in their approach to work and be willing to undertake other tasks that are reasonably allocated to them but which are not part of their regular TOR. REQUIREMENTS
Education
Minimum of a post graduate qualification in resource and environmental economics or an undergraduate degree in microeconomics, resource economics or related field of economics and relevant experience in resource and environmental economic analysis.

Work Experience
. At least 3 years experience in undertaking economic analysis related to natural resources and environment management, preferably in the Pacific; and
. Relevant experience in resource and environmental economics.
