Position Summary
This position reports to the Vice President of the School and is responsible for administering all aspects of the SFS - Center for Marine Resource Studies, including staff management and team building; and oversight of Center operations, finance and administration; academic program planning, delivery and evaluation; the Center's Five Year Research Plan and securing grant support; and representation of the Center in local, regional and international arenas.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated upper level organizational management experience in such areas as project management, conducting academic and/or research programs, or heading environmental issue-driven projects, programs or organizations
- Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a marine-related field with demonstrated research and field experience
- Minimum three years' experience in university teaching
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate and be part of an interdisciplinary teaching and research team
- Knowledge of U.S. higher education system
- Knowledge of Caribbean island life, including culture, history, and governmental operations
- Experience living at a field station preferred

Marine Science Technician

The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS), Inc. is a US incorporated 501(c)(3) 'not-for-profit' marine research and education institution incorporated in New York State and based in Bermuda since 1903. BIOS currently employs a multi-national staff of approximately 100 people and caters to 2,000 scientific and educational visitors per year. The Marine Science Technician's responsibilities and duties include:
* Collaborate with scientists and ship's crew to ensure a safe and successful mission.
* Instruct and assist scientific users of the ship in safe operating procedures of shipboard equipment; and proper oceanographic techniques, both on deck and in the labs.
* Act as system administrator for the ship's computers, including networked Linux and Windows Server systems, firewalls and Satellite based internet services.
* Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, calibrate and repair various oceanographic systems and sensors.
* Deploy/operate/maintain specialized systems which will include SeaBird CTD, RDI ADCP, Knudsen echo sounders and R.M. Young meteorological suite.
The following requirements regarding qualifications and skills are essential:
* Bachelor's degree in a field related to oceanography or information technology. Other degrees and disciplines will be considered with prior experience in a sea-going technical position directly related to oceanographic field studies.
* A minimum of 4 years experience on UNOLS vessels.
* Proven ability to work safely at sea in adverse weather and/or conditions.
* Strong computer skills, including knowledge of basic scientific data processing techniques.
* Must be proficient with Windows-based networking environments and routers/firewalls.
* Knowledge of basic electrical theory and marine electronic systems.
* Experience with oceanographic systems including but not limited to CTD, ADCP, XBT, Met and winch monitoring systems.

Marine Scientist

Oceana is seeking a Washington, DC-based Marine Scientist. The Marine Scientist is a key member of the North American Oceans Division, playing a substantive role on an Oceana campaign team. He/she plays a role in, and may have primary responsibility for, researching Oceana's major campaign topics, developing and achieving policy initiatives, and preparing Oceana technical reports. He/she provides scientific support for the Climate and Energy campaign in particular. The position requires extensive outside contact, particularly with research scientists and representatives of other organizations. He/she must be available for travel as necessary. The successful candidate will have responsibilities in the following areas:
* Participates in Oceana campaign and project teams as Division representative. Carries out research on Oceana's campaign topics and other subjects relevant to Oceana's objectives. Conducts literature searches, carries out analyses of primary and secondary literature, drafts reports and policy recommendations. Gathers pertinent information and data through libraries, the web, government agencies and academia; analyzes data as appropriate and prepares reports accordingly.
* Communicates with outside scientists in order to generate academic support for Oceana's work, including scientist sign-on letters and technical review of reports.
* Writes/edits or otherwise provides the scientific foundation for Oceana scientific reports and external communications such as public comment letters, petitions, activist outreach, and FOIA requests.

Education/Experience or Other Requirements
* Master's degree with a major in a relevant scientific discipline such as marine biology, engineering, toxicology, marine geology or oceanography required.
* Familiarity with ocean-related climate change issues required; familiarity with ocean acidification, oil pollution, clean energy or shipping pollution issues strongly preferred.
* Excellent writing, editing, communication, organizational and research skills required.
* Proficiency with Windows-based applications (MS Office Suite preferred). GIS and database proficiency strongly preferred.
* Must be willing to accept varied workload. Some long hours and travel may be required.
* Must have the ability to handle many tasks simultaneously, with speed, accuracy, and courtesy, show initiative, and exhibit insightful planning and understanding of abstract concepts.
* Ability to take initiative in suggesting ways to augment work and responsibilities of position to accomplish Oceana's goals.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY: Direct the work of supervisors, staff and volunteers, managing both work and workers, getting projects completed on time, keeping cost within budget and maintaining established quality standards. Responsible for orienting and training employees, hourly wage recommendations, job safety, guest safety, equal opportunity compliance, discipline and promotions recommendation to upper management. The incumbent oversees the daily operation of animal training staff and animal collection. He/she also teaches proper husbandry procedures, animal training techniques and showmanship skills. Ensures staff and volunteers have the proper equipment and materials to perform job safely and effectively. Develops plans and projects to enhance staff knowledge and advance training techniques while maintaining safety. Coordinates and aids in veterinary procedures with rehab and resident mammals under the guidance of the veterinarian. Responsible for all governmental permits related to marine mammals. The manager is responsible for the coordination of all marine mammal stranding events.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
* Teach trainers proper husbandry procedures, training methods and safety guidelines through active participation.

Position Description
The Outdoor Education Director job is a full time permanent position, reporting to the Executive Director. The
Outdoor Education Director is responsible for development and implementation of a first-rate outdoor
environmental education program. He/She assists with marketing Camp programs to schools and building a
reputation for quality. Key responsibilities include: 1) staff hiring and leadership 2) program management
3) school relationships 4) increasing nature program offerings on and off-site for all ages
Qualifications
. College degree in recreation administration, natural science, or education. Masters preferred.
. Proven ability to lead in a camp setting as seen in previous seasons of leadership experience directing an
outdoor education program or summer camp or equivalent.
. Must have strong leadership, supervision, teaching, program management skills.
. Experience in teaching elementary age students and successfully working with teens.
. Ability to organize and implement an active hands-on outdoor environmental education program.

The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher seeks talented, enthusiastic educators to lead groups of all ages in a wide range of programs and activities. The Special Activities branch of the Aquarium's Education Section offers fee-based programs and activities to school groups and the general public. This includes but is not limited to: salt marsh explorations, sleepovers, canoeing, crabbing, summer camps, surf fishing, themed birthday parties, live animal presentations, craft classes, and auditorium presentations. Special Activities Instructors are integral to the success of the Aquarium's education mission.
Requirements:
* Strong public speaking and presentation skills
* Thorough understanding of coastal ecology and general biology
* Commitment to education partnered with a strong work ethic
* Enthusiastic and positive attitude
* Bachelor of Science or Arts in education, marine biology, biology, parks and recreation, environmental studies or related field preferred
* Flexible work schedule, must be able to work weekdays, weekends, and some nights
* Ability to lift 25 lbs
* Comfortable handling live animals
* Valid NC drivers license
* CPR and First Aid Certification
* Life Guard Certification is a plus
* Ability to work outdoors in summer heat for hours at a time
* Sense of humor

Volunteer Rangers

Chumbe Island Coral Park, Zanzibar (Tanzania) is offering three volunteer positions during 2011. Two of the volunteer positions would be to work as Ramadan Rangers for the 2011 Ramadan season and one volunteer position to work as guiding Ranger Trainer for a minimum of 2 months during 2011. The Ramadan Rangers would be expected to arrive on the 28th of July and stay until the 1st of September 2010, while the Ranger Trainer dates are more flexible and would preferably start as early as March or if it overlaps with ramadan be one of the ramadan rangers during Ramadan.
During the Islamic holy month of Ramadan our Zanzibar Rangers are not able to swim/snorkel in the sea during daytime, but they are performing the rest of their daily duties (such as guiding forest walks, intertidal walks,
lighthouse tour and viewing of the coconut crabs). Chumbe Island Coral Park, Ltd (CHICOP) seeks two volunteers to serve as snorkel guides in our healthy coral reef.
The Ramadan ranger positions involves guest relations while guiding the guests at Chumbe's eco-lodge while snorkeling inside the marine park, requiring several hours of in-water each day. The Ramadan Rangers deliver a
professional snorkel briefing with safety information and assist guests with finding appropriate snorkel equipment for their reef excursion. The Rangers lead guests of all swimming levels in the water and follow-up after the
snorkeling session with discussions of interesting and environmental issues incorporating reef guides and other visual materials. The Ramadan Rangers are also expected to share their knowledge to the rangers. The position is
ideal for two friends, a married couple, or a person that can easily work closely with other people.
Requirements for Ramadan Ranger:
* Possess a background in marine science
* Have strong experience in diving/snorkelling (and must be a strong swimmer)
* Training in first aid and CPR
* Fluency in English
* Friendly and easy-going personality to interact with diverse guests
* Adaptable and energetic
The Ranger trainer position involves training of the 5 guiding rangers to improve their skills within guiding as well as in natural science and the 3 patrol rangers to increase their service towards guests. The Ranger trainer will have a vary varied job and will be involved in developing good guiding practices in many different fields such as coral reef auditing, forest auditing, eco-architectural auditing, intertidal auditing as well as coconut crab exploration and light house tours. We are incorporating the modern ideas of Eduction for Sustainable Development not only to the educational visits but also to the guests. Chumbe is privately managed, not for profit and the guest staying in the MPA are paying for the conservation, therefore we see the importance that they should have a better guided experience (learning experience) when visiting Chumbe. With more guest and happier guests we have more money to spend on conservation!
Requirements for Ranger Trainer:
* Possess a background in natural science
* Possess a background in guiding / hospitality with working experience
* Have strong experience in diving/snorkeling (and must be a strong swimmer)
* Training in first aid and CPR
* Fluency in English
* Friendly and easy-going personality to interact with diverse guests
* Adaptable and energetic
CHICOP will provide the Ramadan Ranger and Ranger Trainer with:
* Basic accommodation in the Island Lodge Manager's house
* All daily staff food on Chumbe Island
Please note, we are not able to fund any travel to Zanzibar, but we will gladly arrange for your airport pick-up/ drop-off and provide you with boat transportation from Zanzibar to Chumbe Island.
This is an excellent opportunity to experience the famous Chumbe Island reef sanctuary and to work with a team of local staff members. The uninhabited island has a maximum capacity of 16 overnight guests and hosts numerous rare and endangered terrestrial and marine species. The mission statement for Chumbe Island Coral Park is "To manage, for conservation and educational purposes, the Chumbe Island Reef Sanctuary and the Forest Reserve. This is also supported by eco-tourism activities which are directly related to the non-consumptive uses of the natural resources."
