The Marine Fish Conservation Network is seeking to hire its next Executive Director, working out of its Washington, DC office. MFCN is a national coalition of almost 200 national, regional and local environmental organizations, recreational and commercial fishing groups, aquariums, and marine science groups dedicated to marine fish conservation and to sustainable fish populations, ecosystems, and fishing communities. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and is expected to:
· Serve as spokesperson for the Network;
· Oversee MFCN's day-to-day operations;
· Develop and execute (with the Network's staff) campaigns and programs to:
o End overfishing and rebuild overfished stocks
o Defend and improve the Magnuson-Stevens Act
o Increase and defend National Marine Fisheries Service budgets
o Reduce scientific and management uncertainty in fisheries management by improving data collection, monitoring, and accountability
o Advance ecosystem-based fisheries management
· Manage the organization's finances (with the Network's contract accountant) including developing budgets, cash flow, audit reports, and tax filings;
· Improve and execute the Network's fundraising strategy, including identifying and cultivating support from foundations, corporations, and individuals, writing grant proposals, and reporting to donors;
· Supervise a staff of 3 full-time employees and (currently) 6 contractors;
· Assist the Board of Directors to make informed decisions regarding the finances and administrative policies of the Network;
· Manage the ongoing discussions, debates and decision-making of the Network's Board of Advisors to develop and implement Network policies and strategies; and
· Revise (with the Board of Advisors and staff) the Network's Strategic Plan, with emphasis on the objectives and tactics needed for the next reauthorization of the Magnuson-Stevens Act.
Qualifications:
· minimum of 10 years of experience in environmental policy development;
· at least 10 years of management experience;
· strong organizational skills, able to manage multiple projects, and comfortable in a fast-paced work environment;
· good understanding of campaign-focused advocacy, including developing strategy, organizing, and media relations;
· direct experience in non-profit or academic fundraising;
· strong writing and communications skills;
· advanced degree in environmental science, political science, environmental law, or a related field is desirable; and
· knowledge of federal fisheries management policy and/or science is highly desired.

Brief Description of Job Duties: This position will assist in the coordination of salvage and recovery efforts of marine mammal carcasses for the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) Marine Mammal Pathobiology Laboratory (MMPL). The incumbent will serve as member of FWC's manatee necropsy team conducting field and laboratory necropsies on manatee and other marine mammal carcasses, record observations and complete associated necropsy reports. This position will recover marine mammal carcasses for necropsy from the Northwest region (coastal and inland waterways of Manatee County to Escambia County) of Florida and assist in manatee rescue and transport operations in the Northwest region as well as assist with manatee rescue and capture operations away from designated area as needed. This position will be responsible for preparation and labeling of sample containers, carcass disposal, and cleaning of equipment and instruments as well as downloading and logging photographs taken during necropsies, rescues, captures, and other field activities, overseeing repairs and general maintenance of all photography equipment, and maintaining frozen tissue inventories at the MMPL. This position will be responsible for assisting with the coordination of the MMPL's response to cetacean strandings in Tampa Bay, maintaining the MMPL's cetacean stranding records, coordinating with regional cetacean stranding partners and organizing semi-annual cetacean stranding workshops. This position will have an assigned work schedule of Tuesday- Saturday (8:00 am-5:00 pm) and will be asked to respond to marine mammal emergencies and carcasses outside of normal work schedule as needed or assigned. This position will serve in a rotation with other MMPL staff members for the purpose of covering the Northwest Region during state holidays.
Entry Level Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
* Knowledge of the Florida Manatee Recovery Plan and state and federal legislation protecting manatees
* Knowledge of methods of data collection and principles and techniques of research and analysis

Duties and Responsibilities
The Administrative and Web Site Assistant will work under the supervision of the Executive Director to: 1) assist all staff members with daily administrative duties and assistance with travel arrangements; 2) organize and coordinate meetings and calls of staff, Network Members and others; 3) assist staff members to write and upload content onto the MFCN web site (using Joomla CMS), and 4) help the Network have a dynamic, timely and engaging web site that highlights both the activities of the Network and also issues/events relevant to sustainable fisheries and marine conservation.
Knowledge and Skill Requirements
Candidates must be personable, energetic, dependable, and self-motivated. He or she must demonstrate an attention to detail and be a team player. The candidate should possess excellent oral and written communication skills, and hold a Bachelor's degree (preferably in any field related to environmental conservation or a demonstrated interest in the field). The candidate must also have experience in office administration and with management of web sites.
Salary and Benefits
Salary range is $31,000-$35,000, depending on experience. The Network has excellent benefits including two weeks of vacation in the first year, in addition to the week off between Christmas and New Year's Day, 10 holidays, full health and dental insurance and short-term disability insurance.

Eurasian Mussel Outreach Position

This position will serve as the primary staff member for University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Eurasian Mussel Education and Outreach Program. This project is a 1 year 2 months long program supported
through extramural grants, based in Sacramento, CA, and lead by UCCE Natural Resources Advisor, Jodi Cassell. The goal of the project is to develop educational programs and materials about invasive Eurasian mussels for two
specific audiences; small to medium size irrigation and water districts, and formal and informal educators. Major duties for this position include, but are not limited to:
* Research educational programming needs of small to medium size irrigation and water districts based on a survey and consultation and review of the scientific and technical literature.
* Work with, teachers and informal educators, to develop additional modules for curriculum focusing on invasive Eurasian mussels. Test curriculum modules in the classroom and with teachers.
* Take a leadership role in development and of project outreach materials and workshop curriculum.
* Organize logistics, locations, and staff major project outreach activities, such as workshops and project advisory committee meetings.
* Represent UCCE at local and statewide meetings to learn about scientific and management issues, and provide groups with information about the Eurasian mussel program.

The Mission Blue Program Manager will report to the Mission Blue Executive Director and work closely with the wider NGS Mission Programs team to implement NGS's role as "network hub." In addition, the Manager will coordinate the development and implementation of MB projects carried out by partners, track progress and ensure effective reporting back to the network. The Manager will also oversee all communications efforts associated with Mission Blue, ensuring the effective development and implementation of a communications strategy to advance Mission Blue's goals. Responsibilities
- Network Management and Partner Liaison:
Help generate and implement innovative mechanisms for accelerating marine conservation through the use of the Mission Blue brand and network of partners. Coordinate with counterparts in partner organizations such as NGOs, governments, foundations and scientific/academic institutions to facilitate participation in the development and implementation of collective Mission Blue marine conservation efforts.
Track progress and ensure effective reporting on conservation impacts.
Organize and execute the annual Mission Blue Conference as well as smaller meetings of working groups on MPAs, Fisheries, Policy and Awareness Raising, including agendas, invitees and oversee the development of documents, logistics and execution.
- Network Communications:
Design and implement an internal communications strategy to build and sustain a sense of connection and momentum among Mission Blue partners. This will include the gathering and synthesizing of relevant conservation outcomes, opportunities, science, and in particular successes generated by the Mission Blue network and communicating this to the network on a regular basis using various methods and media including: newsletters and a digital forum for exchanging information, developing strategies and identifying common priorities.

Working closely with communications and marketing experts within NGS and among other key Mission Blue partners, ensure effective, clear and impactful messaging to various outside/public audiences around the world. This would include:

State Coordinator - Regional Ocean Ecosystem Based Management Coordination Program

The position of State Coordinator - Regional Ocean Ecosystem Based Management (EBM) Coordination Program is based out of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), Division of Fish, Wildlife and Marine Resources, East Setauket, New York office. It is funded through the NYS Environmental Protection Fund. This position may require frequent daily and/or overnight travel, primarily in New York, and occasionally to meetings outside the state. The incumbent is supervised by the Assistant Bureau Chief of Marine Resources at DEC and will be expected to develop the overall goals of the state program.
Duties: (1) Develop a New York State Ocean Action Plan that includes place-based goals, measurable long-term and short-term objectives, action items, work plans, time lines and performance measures intended to produce positive and sustainable ecosystem outcomes for both human activities and natural systems. (2) Establish an ongoing advisory process for involving key stakeholder interests as well as a governance structure for implementation of the action plan. (3) Assist in the development of the NYS Ocean Health Index, Ocean Spatial Plan, offshore Significant Coastal Fish and Wildlife Habitats and EBM approaches for fisheries management. (4) Track implementation of DEC ocean projects. (5) This position will have the responsibility of representing the DEC on Ocean Action Plan issues to the public, including marine resource user groups and the general public.
Qualifications:Applicants must have a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university in a discipline appropriate to the position which may include natural, chemical, physical or political sciences, with three years of full-time experience in a field directly related to the duties of the position. Graduate degrees awarded in a discipline directly related to the duties of the position may be substituted for the experience as follows: one year for a master's degree, and two years for a Ph.D. Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge of ecology, natural resources, or ecosystem management. The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) is advertising for three 3-year Postdoctoral Fellowship positions to investigate climate change effects on coral reefs, corals, their associated microbes and viruses - see below. There is scope to work on a broad range of issues within the topic of corals, coral reefs and climate change, and we encourage early career researchers with skills in marine ecophysiology, molecular biology, microbiology and virology, prokaryote bioinformatics, ecological modelling or geochemistry to apply.
Super Science Fellowships
The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) is the leading national organisation researching tropical marine ecosystems. The Institute has world-class laboratory facilities, two modern research vessels and extensive technical support. Facilities are being enhanced with $55M of capital funds from the Australian Government. This will include a state-of-the-art experimental ocean simulator in an extensive seawater precinct to support innovative research into coral spawning, water quality and climate change.
As part of the Australian Government?s Super Science Initiative (Marine and Climate), AIMS has received competitive funding from the Australian Research Council to support three exceptional early-career researchers. Successful applicants will conduct original research within a Project entitled ?A Changing Climate on the Great Barrier Reef: Present and Future Implications?, with a focus on the following topics:
1. Interactive effects of changing climate and water quality on corals and coral reefs (Position No. 468):
Position summary:
- To conduct innovative experimental and/or desktop research to investigate the interactive effects of multiple stressors from changing climate (warming seawater/declining pH) and water quality (inshore nutrient loading/sedimentation) on corals and coral reefs.
- To investigate whether improved inshore water quality would ameliorate the impact of global warming on coral reefs.
- Contribute to the identification and definition of specific research questions within this framework, and the development of new approaches to address these.
- Lead and participate in original research, which may be field or laboratory based experimental research, research taking advantage of natural settings, and/or desk based work focusing on the synthesis and interpretation of the wealth of existing data on the subject.
2. Coral cellular microbes: community transitions and roles in a changing climate (Position No. 469):
Position summary:
- Investigate the functional gene changes of the coral holobiont bacterial community during transition of corals from healthy to experimentally stressed (temperature, reduced water pH, nutrients) and diseased states.
- Correlate bacterial gene expression changes and coral/zooxanthellae gene expression during experimental stress experiments on corals.
- Investigate the bacterial community and functional shifts of coral microbial communities in relation to experimentally induced coral stress signs.
- Explore if bacterial communities return to the pre-stressed profiles in relation to structure, location and function.
3. Coral associated viruses: pathogens, mutualists or agents of evolution in a changing climate (Position No. 470)
Position summary:
- Isolate viruses and viral nucleic acids for virome sequence analysis from (1) the water surrounding the coral, (2) the coral surface mucus layer, (3) the coral tissue with all its symbionts, and (4) the zooxanthellae associated with the coral.
- Conduct bioinformatic analyses on virome sequence data, either as a lead scientist or in collaboration with bioinformaticists associated with the project, in order to assess viral diversity present in corals, and gain insight into the functions of coral-associated viruses based on gene content.
- Conduct conventional and/or quantitative PCR to assess spatial and temporal patterns in abundance of certain viral groups in corals.
- Explore coral genome sequences for signatures of lateral gene transfer, either as a lead scientist or in collaboration with bioinformaticists associated with the project.
- Undertake original and adapted field or laboratory based experimental research and data synthesis.
These fellowships are available from 1 July 2011, and represent an exceptional opportunity for early career researchers with skills in marine ecophysiology, molecular biology, microbiology and virology, prokaryote bioinformatics, ecological modelling or geochemistry and an interest in climate change impacts. An assessment of bycatch impacts on regional sea turtle populations and in particular fishing gear types is necessary to prioritize conservation efforts and resources toward the most urgent bycatch situations. This project will build on past work by compiling and organizing all available sea turtle bycatch data to identify the sea turtle Regional Management Units most threatened by bycatch as well as particular fishing gears that most contribute to these threats. We will refine an existing database containing all published sea turtle bycatch rates worldwide from 1990-2008, and tally and assess relative population-level impacts of several different fisheries operations on sea turtle populations.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Intern's tasks will include:
* Assisting in gathering bycatch information via literature reviews and contacting key researchers and data holders;
* Extraction and compilation of bycatch data from published sources to update the bycatch database to current date;
* Organizing database according to sea turtle Regional Management Units to facilitate bycatch assessments;
* Assisting in producing mapping products in ArcGIS summarizing results of bycatch assessments.
Intern's deliverables:
* Completed literature review from 2008 to current date
* Extraction and data entry to update database to current date
* Refined database to allow bycatch assessments at necessary scales
This Internship will be based at CI HQ in Arlington, VA, and is expected to work approximately 20 hours per week for a duration of 12 weeks.
