Research description
We are recruiting a Research Technician for our general research program which utilizes marine mammals, in particularly the large whales, to study the population genetics and evolution in the marine realm. The ultimate goal is to understand the mechanisms driving population genetic structuring and local adaptation of long-range migrating mammals. Many aspects of our research have conservation implications as well.
Qualifications
We are looking for an enthusiastic and self-motivated co-worker, who enjoys acquiring new skills and enjoys working with a team of researchers and students. He /she should have a Bachelor or Masters
degree in Biology (HLO) or related field. The ideal candidate will have experience with (or the ability to acquire) modern molecular genetic methods and instrumentation employed in evolutionary and population genetics such as prepare libraries for next generation sequencing, Sanger sequencing, STR genotyping and cloning. Experience with database management is preferred and a good command of written and spoken English necessary.

Junior Scientist Position - Operational Ocean Modelling, CMCC

Function: implement, calibrate and validate high resolution finite difference ocean models in the Southern Adriatic Sea and Northern Ionian Sea.
Environment: The Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Climate Change is a Ltd Company (CMCC S.c.a.r.l., http://www.cmcc.it/) with research units in Lecce, Bologna, Venice, Capua, Sassari, Milan and Benevento. CMCC aims to promote and coordinate research in climate change and environmental impacts at Italian national level. These activities are carried out in collaboration with Universities, national and international research bodies and the industrial sector. CMCC will start a new action in the framework of operational oceanography, in particular for the production of short term ocean forecasts, analyses and applications. This position is open under the sponsorship of the European Territorial Cooperation Programme Greece-Italy project 'IONIO' (IONian Integrated marine Observatory) awarded to CMCC starting January 2012.
Main Duties: The staff member will work in the Numerical Application and Scenarios Division of CMCC. Our aim is to develop sub-regional to coastal, high resolution Ocean Forecasting Systems in order to estimate and describe, as accurately as possible, the present state of the ocean and improve short range forecast capabilities with particular focus on end-user applications.
The new appointee will work to:
implement high resolution finite difference model at sub-regional scale in the Central Mediterranean Sea with particular focus on the Northern Ionian / Southern Adriatic Area, the model will be nested within the Mediterranean Forecasting System;
contribute to the set up of the operational forecasting model;
contribute to the development of web-based Decision Support Systems;
Qualifications: The candidates should have a Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography, Atmospheric Sciences or related disciplines and preferably experience in numerical modelling. Knowledge of the finite differences OGCM, preferably NEMO, will be considered a plus. Knowledge of Unix and Fortran is required, and experience with supercomputers would be welcome. Fluency in English is also required.
A minimum 2 years working experience after the Ph.D. is required.

Introduction
The English Fisheries Outreach Officer (EFOO) will be responsible for implementing and delivering the Inshore Fisheries Project and contribute to delivering the MSC's overarching aims and objectives of various projects. Working in collaboration with the other members of the outreach team to deliver a consistent approach to European fisheries and commercial outreach, the post holder will contribute to developing the MSC concept in the UK market and engaging fisheries in the UK market.
The post will be responsible for outreach to English fisheries with a focus on the inshore sector, and will liaise closely with work going on elsewhere in the UK and Europe. The post will also work with national MSC focused external projects, promoting the MSC brand and increasing the support for the program across a broad range of interest groups including; fisheries and supply chain stakeholders; government representatives; and partners in the NGO community. The Inshore Fisheries Project in England will take up the majority of the workload and outreach involves presentations, relationship building, essentially explaining the MSC concept and certification program to potential clients (fisheries or other organisations) and working with fisheries as they develop management plans based on Pre-Assessment outputs.
Required Skills
The ideal candidate will have a post-graduate degree or equivalent experience in fisheries or marine conservation biology or environmental management; experience of working with the fisheries capture sector and be able to demonstrate understanding of resource sustainability issues is a necessity; and demonstrated experience working with stakeholders and other external parties. Previous work with the MSC assessment process and/or an understanding of the role of ecolabelling an advantage.

Sea Turtle Intern, Bald Head Island Conservancy
Bald Head Island, NC
The Bald Head Island Conservancy Research Assistantships/Summer Intern Program is open to rising juniors, seniors and recent graduates from any accredited college or university, with majors in biology, marine biology, environmental science, or a related course of study.
Sea turtle interns must assume the following responsibilities:
- Conduct nightly (9 PM - 6 AM) beach patrols on foot or via all terrain vehicles (when available) in order to intercept nesting sea turtles, as a part of the Sea Turtle Protection Program. Take necessary measurements, flipper and PIT tag all nesting females, record all pertinent data, and protect eggs using a wire cage dug into the sand.
- Assist as needed with BHIC's various educational programs and research projects, including giving sea turtle lectures to the general public, kayak trips and assisting with camps.
- Assist with other duties as necessary including working in Turtle Central, the Information Center and various office tasks.
- Be able to work in less than favorable conditions such as intense heat & humidity and bugs (mosquitoes and no-see-ums).
- Develop, execute and present individual research project.
- Prepare a follow-up proposal based on the individual research projects.
- Promote and practice stewardship of BHIC's facilities, properties, and research equipment.
- Participate as needed in special events of BHIC during his/her tenure on the island.
- Live in BHIC's dormitory during their service period, generally mid-May through mid-August.
- Understand and agree to the documents ?Procedures for Naturalist and Intern Program, and ?Dormitory Regulations and Advice prepared by BHIC.
- Must possess a valid Driver's License.
Qualifications:
- Outstanding undergraduate student (rising junior or senior) or recent graduate at an institution of higher learning
- Candidates for the assistantships will be judged on:
- Research and academic potential
- Character and leadership
- Public relations and communication skills: outgoing, helpful and positive personality; maturity and leadership abilities; comfortable with public speaking; the ability to handle sensitive situations in a tactful and diplomatic manner
- An expressed interest or background in conducting biological research, and a willingness to work in a field environment that can be physically challenging
- Ability to be a team player as well as work independently, and willingly perform a variety of tasks as needed
Salary: $1200 for the summer

Kemp's ridley Conservation Internship, Sea Turtle Inc
South Padre Island, TX
Two internship time periods: 6 positions available for mid March - mid August and 2 positions for early May - mid August. Interns will learn about medical care of sea turtles and Kemp's ridley nest conservation. Interns will work in our hospital facility with the general public and be required to give short educational presentations and help care for resident sea turtles. Tasks at the hospital include public education, medical treatment, triaging, calculating dosages, assisting in gift shop and tagging sea turtles. In addition to working at the hospital facility interns will also conduct ATV beach patrols for nesting sea turtles along a 32 mile stretch and remote 7 mile stretch of open beach. Interns also work in nest hatchery and assist with hatchling releases.
Requirements: Applicants must be studying in or a graduate of biological science at a University or College. Undergrad applicants must be of Junior standing or higher. US Citizenship or paperwork to work in the US is required. 18 years of age or older and hold a valid driver's license. Passport recommended but not required. Applicants must be comfortable working in adverse weather conditions including high winds, direct sunlight, high heat and humidity. Housing provided on South Padre Island.
