Quantitative Ecologist/Statistician (2 posts available), Centre for Research into Ecological and Environmental Modelling
St. Andrews, Scotland
Description
Ref SB2276
School of Mathematics and Statistics, Centre for Research into Ecological and Environmental Modelling (CREEM)
Salary: 29,972-35,788 euro pa
Start: 2 April 2012 or as soon as possible thereafter, Fixed Term: 3 years
Details
Applications are invited for two Postdoctoral Research Fellows (PDRFs) on a new research project to start April 2012. The project entitled MOCHA: "Multi-study OCean acoustics Human effects Analysis" is a large,
international collaborative project with the funded posts based within CREEM at the University of St Andrews. The research is funded by the United States Office of Naval Research.
There is currently great concern about the impacts of man-made noise in the oceans on marine fauna. Behavioural Response Studies (BRSs) are experiments aimed at directly quantifying the relationship between potential anthropogenic disturbances and their effect on the behaviour of specific marine mammals. The United States Navy is making a substantial investment in BRS studies, aimed at understanding the effect of active sonar on species of concern. Despite the difficulties of conducting such experiments in the field and analysing such complex data, we believe that substantial progress can be made to enhance the inferences drawn from existing and future BRS data. We will achieve this by bringing together researchers undertaking BRS studies and statisticians specializing in the analysis of biological experiments of this kind in a working group format, with dedicated researcher effort between group meetings.
We require two post-doctoral researchers to work within this project. You will either be a statistician or ecologist with demonstrable experience in quantitative methods with a PhD in statistics, mathematics, ecology, or a related quantitative discipline. A broad interest or experience in the field of marine mammal biology, animal behaviour or phase 1 clinical trials would be advantageous.

BACKGROUND
FishSource is a program of the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP, www.sustainablefish.org<http://www.sustainablefish.org>), an international NGO that advises grocery retailers and suppliers on sustainable seafood procurement, and assists marine capture fisheries, aquaculture industries, and management authorities to gradually improve seafood production methods and governance. SFP is augmenting a contributor network to develop and maintain fisheries information resources of two online portals, which are both managed by the SFP FishSource program: FishSource.com and FisheriesWiki.org. We are organizing the contributor network through regional (e.g., Southeast Asia)- and seafood sector (e.g., canned tuna) -based working groups.
Retailers and their buyers, in implementing sustainable procurement policies, need to assess fisheries against sustainability criteria. www.FishSource.com<http://www.FishSource.com> is SFP's answer for SFP partner companies to obtain this information. It provides open access to fisheries information, relative scores against standardized criteria, consolidating the main scientific information that seafood buyers and their expert advisers need when evaluating the sustainability of individual fisheries.
www.FisheriesWiki.org<http://www.FisheriesWiki.org> will serve as the global commons encyclopedia of fisheries, providing current, accurate, detailed information on global aquaculture and marine capture fisheries. The FisheriesWiki website will serve as a portal to the following fisheries information resources to meet information demands of fisheries scientists, management authorities, seafood supply chain companies, and other communities:
(i) Comprehensive reviews, both through detailed technical information and summaries for a lay audience in non-technical language, of the ecological sustainability of individual fisheries;
(ii) Centralized tracking of Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) work plan activities and implementation;
(iii) Metadata catalogue of fishery-dependent datasets, enabling discovery of relevant datasets, and a determination of how individual datasets can best be integrated (pooled);
(iv) Repository for electronic copies of materials that are references as primary source literature in (i) and (ii).
Please see www.sustainablefish.org<http://www.sustainablefish.org> and www.fishsource.org<http://www.fishsource.org> for more information on SFP and FishSource, including to review examples of FishSource fishery profiles.

Bald Head Island Conservancy Internships
Bald Head Island, NC
Bald Head Island Conservancy summer 2012 internships will be available by the start of next week. Applications and job summaries can be found on http://www.bhic.org<http://www.bhic.org/>. Applications are due by February 10, 2012. We offer four specific internships: Wildlife Patrol, Sea Turtle Patrol, Environmental Educator, and Kayak Guide/Environmental Educator positions. The Bald Head Island Conservancy Intern Program is open to rising juniors, seniors or recent graduates from any accredited college or university, with majors in biology, marine biology, environmental science, education, or a related course of study.
Bald Head Island is part of a 12,000-acre island complex (Smith Island Complex) located at the mouth of the Cape Fear River in southeastern North Carolina, and consists of three forested peninsulas interconnected by a continuous beach strand: Bluff, Middle and Bald Head Islands. Bald Head Island features an upscale residential community of approximately 1,100 homes, with approximately 200 permanent year-round residents. The southern tip of the complex is Cape Fear, and includes ten miles of ocean beach. The island is accessible by a private passenger ferry from Southport, NC.
Funding for this internship is provided by Bald Head Island Conservancy, Inc. (the Conservancy), a non-profit organization formed in 1983. The Conservancy's mission is three-fold: conserving and preserving the natural resources of the Smith Island Complex and surrounding waters; providing quality environmental education for island residents and visitors; facilitating scientific research of benefit to the environmental resources of the area. As a part of this mission, the Conservancy operates a nationally recognized Sea Turtle Protection Program, and is the only non-governmental agency in North Carolina allowed to conduct flipper tagging of sea turtles. Because of the Conservancy's long-standing commitment to this conservation program, Bald Head Island is used by U.S. Fish and Wildlife as an index beach for sea turtle nesting activity.
In addition, the Conservancy provides diverse educational programs and activities for the island community, and serves as an environmental monitor for the island ecosystems. Within a campus at the east end of the island, the Conservancy's facilities include a modern four bedroom "dorm" (used to house the naturalist, summer interns, and visiting researchers), the Barrier Island Study Center, an education center, and the gift shop Turtle Central, which underwrites much of the Conservancy's operation. In addition, the Conservancy owns a 21-acre nature preserve on Middle Island, and employs a permanent staff of 9 and a part time staff of 2. This internship is intended to give undergraduates not only environmental education experience, but also experience in working at a small non-profit organization. While the majority of the summer will be spent assisting with camps and various educational programs, interns will also work at Turtle Central, staff BHIC's information center, and help with other various office-oriented projects (such as mail pickup and envelope stuffing). Interns will also conduct individual research projects that match their interests. Little scientific research has been conducted on the island apart from that focused on sea turtles. The research projects will not only benefit the student, but also provide the island, residents and researchers with invaluable knowledge of the island and its inhabitants. Students will be expected to complete the research project and present the results to the community at the end of the summer. In addition students are encouraged to write a proposal for future research in the format of the NSF's Graduate Research Fellowship.
The term of the environmental education intern is for a period of three months: from mid-May to mid-August, subject to undergraduate academic schedules. Interns should be able to arrive on BHI on the weekend of May 12/13, though a day or two of flexibility may be allowed depending on academic exam schedules and be able to stay until August 13, give or take a day. Applicants who have graduated may have the chance to extend their stay, as we typically extend employment of one intern through the fall. Arrival in mid-May provides for a training period of approximately two weeks prior to the start of actual educational duties on the island. The education intern serves at the will of the Conservancy, and the positions may be terminated by the Conservancy at any time.
The stipend to be paid for the recipients of the Bald Head Island Conservancy internship shall be $1,200 per summer, paid monthly; this amount is pre-tax. In addition to the stipend, living quarters in the Conservancy dorm are provided, as well as weekly ferry tickets for trips between the island and the mainland, and parking for a vehicle at the mainland ferry terminal. Please note that males and females will have separate bedrooms.
The deadline to receive applications for 2012 summer internships is February 10, 2012. Follow application directions very carefully, as incomplete applications will not be considered. Please mail your application to the address below; email is NOT preferable. Please visit http://www.bhic.org<http://www.bhic.org/> for more information, position responsibilities, selection criteria, and specific internship applications.
