Marine and Fisheries Lawyer, ClientEarth
London

ClientEarth is a non-profit environmental law, science and policy organisation with offices in London, Brussels, and Warsaw. We provide dedicated public-interest legal capacity, working with environmental NGOs and other stakeholders and acting as legal advocates for environmental objectives. We work at a policy and legislative level to lobby for strong laws and policies that protect the environment, and we pursue litigation that supports our strategic objectives. Our work is based on the development and execution of clear strategies and productive partnerships to ensure our actions to protect the human right to a clean and healthy environment have maximum impact.

We have an exciting and challenging opportunity for a mid-level lawyer (3-7 years PQE) to join our Biodiversity team in London working on fisheries and leading on the Sustainable Seafood Coalition.

Project Description: Sustainable Seafood Coalition

ClientEarth has created a partnership of seafood industry stakeholders called the 'Sustainable Seafood Coalition' (SSC). The SSC seeks to ensure that 'all fish and seafood sold in the UK is from sustainable sources'. The SSC proposes to do this through the creation and oversight of a series of voluntary codes of conduct connected with seafood sourcing and consumption, the reduction of discards and creation of a sustainable market for unwanted species, data collection, and the harmonisation of labelling. The SSC will seek to build national and global alliances and influence changes at UK, EU and international level.

The SSC is already operational. It currently has 15 members and industry representatives, including 5 major supermarkets, several seafood brands and suppliers as well as celebrity Chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittinsgstall. The SSC will soon be expanding to the foodservice and fishmeal sector to ensure a fully cross-industry membership. We will also be expanding the SSC to other EU Member States.

We now need a mid-level lawyer who will develop the coalition and ensure we achieve our vision of sustainable seafood.

Associate, International Policy, Pew Environment Group
Washington, DC

The Pew Charitable Trusts is driven by the power of knowledge to solve today's most challenging problems. Pew applies a rigorous, analytical approach to improve public policy, inform the public and stimulate civic life. The mission of the Pew Environment Group is to promote policies and practices that protect the global environment, preserve healthy forests and marine ecosystems. For the past two decades, the Environment group has been a major force in driving conservation policy in the United States, and increasingly internationally. The group's work is focused on reducing the scope and severity of three major global environmental problems:

 *   Transition to a clean energy economy from one based primarily on the burning of fossil fuels;
 * The erosion of large wilderness ecosystems that contain a great part of the world's remaining biodiversity; and,
 * The destruction of the world's marine environment, with a particular emphasis on global fisheries.

A core goal of the Pew Environment Group Marine Strategy is to establish an international governance system for marine fisheries that are not under the jurisdiction of any one nation and that often move between the territorial waters of various countries on their annual migrations. Over the last five years the Pew Environment Group has launched international campaigns with objectives that require engagement with intergovernmental forums established to globally manage the oceans and their resources ranging from the United Nations General Assembly to the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), among others. All of these campaigns require direct engagement with intergovernmental fora such as the United Nations, Regional Fishery Management Organizations (RFMOs), and various international treaty organizations to achieve their goals. They also require advocacy with government decision-makers in influential countries and effective collaboration with non-governmental organizations and scientists worldwide.

In December 2009 the Board of the Pew Charitable Trusts approved the International Policy Program, to support public education and outreach, dissemination of nonpartisan research and analyses, and advocacy in international fora. The program engages with international institutions, and governments, focused on IUU fishing, deep sea conservation, sharks, tuna, and other related campaigns, and provides the leadership and strategic focus in intergovernmental fora for these and related Pew campaigns.

The associate, reporting to the director (or signaled designate) will assist the director, senior officers, and officers, International Policy to develop and execute strategic policy plans designed to successfully influence the position of target governments at international meetings of strategic importance, in line with objectives identified by relevant campaigns and the International Policy Team. This will include assistance with strategies to influence the United Nations and its institutions, relevant RFMOs, and governments engaged with those institutions, and will also include work on communications as part of the broader policy advocacy effort.

Responsibilities:

 *   Assist the International Policy Team staff in developing and implementing international policy strategies;
 *   Assist in the oversight of contractors and consultants;
 *   Conduct research projects;
 * Research and write campaign materials, such as reports, booklets, fact sheets and web content
 *   Assist with production management for campaign materials;
 *   Represent the international policy project at meetings and on conference calls within Pew, with partner groups, with RFMOs, governments and where necessary, the UN and Member States;
 *   Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant international meetings;
 *   Compile and synthesize relevant information, with a view to contribute to the development of strategy paper and communication instruments;
 *   Participate in intergovernmental meetings, conferences, seminars and official forums;
 * Contribute to and participate in tasks of the department as assigned, as well as broader Trust-related projects and activities as needed.
Requirements:

 * One year of experience in environmental and public policy required. A bachelor's degree is required and an advanced degree and expertise in marine issues or international policy is strongly preferred.
 *   Working knowledge of marine conservation and policy issues, particularly pertaining to the High Seas;
 *   Excellent written and oral communications skills, including an ease in communicating complex concepts in a clear effective manner for a general audience;
 *   A detail and results-oriented style with a focus on process and achievement.  Recognized ability to meet multiple deadlines by maintaining a high level of organization;
 *   Demonstrated strong analytical skills, including an ability to synthesize large amounts of information and to focus quickly on the essence of an issue. A strong commitment to producing measurable results;
 *   Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to develop and manage productive relationships with consultants, partners, grantees and others who contribute to the effectiveness of the project;
 *   Able to establish credibility quickly and to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external parties, including grantees.  Able to develop productive relationships with consultants;
 * Experience with media and other communications strategies to deliver policy recommendations and/or scientific findings to policy makers and the public desired.
