The SFS Center for Marine Resource Studies, located on South Caicos in the Turks & Caicos Islands, seeks an enthusiastic, team-oriented Center Director to lead a resident staff in the delivery of high quality, field-based academic programs to undergraduate students from American colleges and universities.
Position Summary
This position reports to the Vice President of the School and is responsible for administering all aspects of the SFS - Center for Marine Resource Studies, including staff management and team building; and oversight of Center operations, finance and administration; academic program planning, delivery and evaluation; the Center's Five Year Research Plan and securing grant support; and representation of the Center in local, regional and international arenas.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated upper level organizational management experience in such areas as project management, conducting academic and/or research programs, or heading environmental issue-driven projects, programs or organizations
- Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a marine-related field with demonstrated research and field experience
- Minimum three years' experience in university teaching

Duties and Responsibilities
Program Administration
- Lead program planning activities prior to semester and summer programs, and debrief following student departures, including written reports to HQ
- Lead regular staff faculty and student meetings in support of excellent program delivery

Fiscal & Facility Management
- Ensure sound fiscal management through careful review of the budget and expenditures, working closely with the Vice President of Finance & Administration and the Site Manager to develop and manage operating and capital budgets
- Work with Site Manager to carry out facility and vehicle maintenance and replacement and to manage the import process of goods and consumables
- Assume overall safety of all program participants, staff and visitors, working closely with the Student Affairs/Program Manager and the Dive Safety Officer, including the enforcement of Center vehicle and boat policies, diving protocols, and Center risk assessment and management plans
- Ensure that Center operates in a manner which is consistent with local, regional, and national laws, regulations and codes
- Work with Center and HQ staff to develop and deliver upon request Center rentals and special programs during program intersession periods

Academic & Research Program Management
- Work with the SFS Dean, the Center team, clients and stakeholders to ensure ongoing implementation and development of the Center's Five Year Research Plan, including appropriate involvement of students, publication of results, data management and record keeping, retention of partners and achievement of research goals
- Review with the Dean the undergraduate academic curriculum and work with the faculty to update and improve pedagogy and content of classes and field work

The School for Field Studies Center for Marine Resource Studies in Turks & Caicos Islands is seeking a full-time, year-round Resident Lecturer. Serve as part of a residential team of faculty and staff that delivers an interdisciplinary, hands-on education and research experience to undergraduate students spending a semester or summer abroad. In this year-round position, the teaching load is one and one-third courses per semester & one-third of a summer course. Field research is conducted with undergraduates and program assistants.

Center Objective
Quantify social and ecological baselines, conduct on-going monitoring, help to mitigate change to the marine environment and prepare the local community for the advent of mainstream tourism through research and education.
Course Overview
The Environmental Policy and Socio-Economic Values course is designed to assist students in understanding the political, legal, economic, ethical and social pressures that influence the environment and the community's attitudes toward development.
Issues to be addressed include: social and political systems (TCI and Caribbean); economic status of South Caicos (within context of TCI and Caribbean); Environmental policy (marine and terrestrial); Political Ecology; Artisanal fisheries in the TCI and Caribbean; Anthropological and sociological aspects of community development; Politics and processes of environmental regulation development; Environmental/ecological economics (marine emphasis); Economic assessment techniques; Social survey techniques; Globalization and free trade impact on the local and regional community; Urbanization; Pollution impacts (terrestrial and marine); Marine protected areas.
In addition, the empowerment of local people in the creation of sustainable development projects will be examined within the context of the current development plans for South Caicos. This course is based on a comprehensive approach that encompasses management, economics, policy, legal and social issues. The Environmental Policy and Socio-economic Values faculty will work closely with our Tropical Marine Ecology, and Marine Resource Management faculty to deliver an inter-disciplinary program. The successful candidate will provide high quality, experiential teaching and participate fully in the implementation of the center's multi-year research plan that addresses these issues.
Duties and Responsibilitie
-Educate students about the complexity of local development and conservation issues through field-based teaching, scientific research and training;
- Create a rich mosaic of research questions centered on supporting functional ecosystems while balancing the needs of human communities;
- Empower local communities and decision makers to address their sustainable development challenges through applied research that informs local decision making; and
- Contribute to the scientific community through the dissemination of research, including peer-reviewed publications and professional meetings.
Teaching
- As part of an interdisciplinary teaching team, teach one third of the academic program (minimum 50 lecture hours per semester)
- Plan, revise, and effectively deliver a challenging, problem-based interdisciplinary curriculum
- Organize lectures and prepare course materials in a timely and professional manner

Conservation International has a leading program focused on addressing the marine and coastal impacts of climate change - both on communities and on critical species and ecosystems. A major accomplishment of the program has been the development of an innovative climate change vulnerability assessment process. This process addresses the ecological and socio-economic impacts of climate change around the world through collaboration of local communities, local to national governments and leading scientific experts.
The Marine Climate Change Manager oversees the implementation of CIs Marine Vulnerability Assessments. The manager works closely with CI field programs and partners to develop Vulnerability Assessment projects through synthesizing the regional and local marine management and policy needs, the scientific expertise required to address those needs and close stakeholder engagement. The manger then works closely with the field staff and partners to ensure the successful completion of the vulnerability assessment, dissemination of outputs and recommendations, and implementation of those recommendations through follow on climate change adaptation projects and policy.
The Marine Climate Change Manager also supports development of a capacity building program for partners based on the Vulnerability assessment process, including managing the creation of a manual focused on marine vulnerability assessments.
RESPONSIBILITIES
* Work closely with CIs field programs to develop and ensure successful implementation of marine climate change program field projects including:
* Marine climate change Vulnerability Assessments
* Climate Change Adaptation Projects
* This requires liaising with scientific partners, project (including budget) oversight, writing scientific papers, development of appropriate science to action products for communicating recommendations and results, and fundraising support.
* Provide technical support on marine climate change issues to CIs field and other programs
* Support development of the marine climate change capacity building program, including the development of a user-friendly manual on the vulnerability assessment process.
* Build and maintain strong working relationships with a wide range of partners, including scientists, governments, NGO partners, local communities and other stakeholder from a broad range of cultural and other backgrounds.

Fisheries Consultant
Mauritius
To combat and be prepared for circumscribing the climate change and its impacts, the Government of the Republic of Mauritius (ROM) has signed a project agreement with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), for the implementation of a UNDP Africa Adaptation Program (AAP) - Supporting Integrated and Comprehensive Approaches to Climate Change Adaptation in Africa - The Republic of Mauritius (ROM). The Government of Japan is funding this AAP Program.
The objective of the project is to develop a robust institutional framework for the mainstreaming of climate change adaptation into core development policies, strategies and plans of the ROM. The outputs of the project are: (i) dynamic long-term planning mechanisms to manage the inherent uncertainties of climate change introduced; (ii) leadership capacities and institutional frameworks to manage climate change risks and opportunities in an integrated manner at the local, regional and national levels strengthened; (iii) climate-resilient policies and measures in priority sectors implemented; (iv) financing options to meet national adaptation costs expanded at local, national, sub-regional and regional levels; (v) knowledge on adjusting national development processes to fully incorporate climate change risks and opportunities generated and shared across all levels.

The Fisheries Expert (4 months) shall work in collaboration with the Policy Expert (3 months) to produce the specified deliverables. Their work will be both overlapping and complementary and would be both responsible to attain the project objectives. Specifically, the tasks of the Fisheries Expert shall comprise the following:
1. climate change impacts assessment and analysis in the fisheries sector;
2. a detailed stock taking in each subsector, including pisciculture, mariculture, (ostreiculture) oyster culture in the different fields (technical, technological, resource) and identifying cross-sectoral linkages and critical information and data requirement for climate change impact assessment;
3. a broad analysis of climate change impacts on the different subsectors and to include both artisanal and industrial fisheries;
4. institutional mapping and review and revision of existing policies, strategies, plans, laws, licence, agreements, in the sector, with focus on the climate change;
5. proposal for the development and setting-up of a framework to facilitate an integrated multisectoral approach to manage climate change within the fisheries sector;
6. development of a good networking system including different stakeholders for data & experience exchange, advice, etc. The possible inclusion of a "forum" space in the websites of the Ministry may be considered;
7. undertaking capacity needs assessment and capacity building for long term planning and modelling to assess impacts of climate change in the fisheries sector and develop adaptation strategies in different subsectors;
8. elaboration and implementation of a training program for trainers for the transfer of knowledge on climate change impacts and adaptation in the subsectors and implementation of this program;
9. preparation of a comprehensive development program, with action plan to address climate change adaptation in the development process in the sector. The consultants would draft small project write-up, with project details, cost estimates, institutional responsibilities, and implementation schedule and devise action plans to address climate change adaptation in the development process of the sector. The action plan shall be in the form of a climate change investment programme for the fisheries sector, with small project write-ups, with details on: objectives; justification; project details; cost estimates; implementation schedules; implementing authorities; monitoring and evaluation;
10. identification and guidance in the implementation of demonstration projects with a view to educate the public on the ways to address climate change impacts in the different subsector. Consideration could be given on the introduction of an appropriate mangrove species from Mauritius that could be of more use in the Rodriguan context, proposal for a fish landing station and a boat mooring area in the South East Marine Protection Area (SEMPA), stabilization of the adjacent inland area of SEMPA to prevent leaching of soil and their discharge into the sea, installation of equipment in the SEMPA for the monitoring of temperature and salinity, etc.;
11. evaluate the impacts of sand extraction on the lagoonal ecosystem of Rodrigues and its effect on beach stability; and
12. development on an inland development control guideline for developments adjacent to the SEMPA to prevent carriage and deposits of heavily charged terriginous materials.
Key Results:
1. climate change impact assessment report on the fisheries sector;
2. institutional mapping report and review and revision proposals of existing policies, strategies, plans, laws, licence, agreement, in the sector with focus on the climate change;
3. framework to facilitate an integrated multisectoral approach to manage climate change within the sector;
4. development of a good networking system including different stakeholders for data and experience exchange, advice, etc.;
5. capacity building for long term planning and modelling to assess impacts of climate change in the fisheries sector and develop adaptation strategies in different fisheries subsectors;
6. training program for trainers for transfer of knowledge on climate change impacts and adaptation in the subsectors and implementation of this program;
7. action plans with projects write-up to address climate change impact adaptation in the development process in the sector;
8. demonstration project proposal and completion report with a view to educate the public on the ways to address climate change impacts in the different subsector;
9. project progress reports and project completion report;
10. inland development control guideline for developments adjacent to the SEMPA;
11. feasibility study report on the possible introduction of the avicennia spp. Mangrove species in Rodrigues;
12. assessment report on sand extraction impacts on lagoonal ecosytems and beach stability in Rodrigues.
The consultants would be required to submit the reports cited above in English to the Director of Fisheries/ Principal Fisheries Officer, the Ministry of Fisheries and Rodrigues, the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development and the UNDP.
All reports and deliverables including in connection with training (i.e. manuals, guidelines, training module-course materials and presentation materials etc.) should also be provided in 6 hard copies as well as 3 electronic versions on CD and copied also by email. All annexed maps, charts, data and figures should be submitted in 12 copies.

The manger then works closely with the field staff and partners to ensure the successful completion of the vulnerability assessment, dissemination of outputs and recommendations, and implementation of those recommendations through follow on climate change adaptation projects and policy.
The Marine Climate Change Manager also supports development of a capacity building program for partners based on the Vulnerability assessment process, including managing the creation of a manual focused on marine vulnerability assessments.
RESPONSIBILITIES
* Work closely with CIs field programs to develop and ensure successful implementation of marine climate change program field projects including:
* Marine climate change Vulnerability Assessments
* Climate Change Adaptation Projects
* This requires liaising with scientific partners, project (including budget) oversight, writing scientific papers, development of appropriate science to action products for communicating recommendations and results, and fundraising support.
* Provide technical support on marine climate change issues to CIs field and other programs
* Support development of the marine climate change capacity building program, including the development of a user-friendly manual on the vulnerability assessment process.
* Build and maintain strong working relationships with a wide range of partners, including scientists, governments, NGO partners, local communities and other stakeholder from a broad range of cultural and other backgrounds.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required
* Advanced degree in marine science, climate change, marine social science or other related environmental field with at least three years related work experience
* Knowledge of climate change adaptation and research methods
* Knowledge of climate change impacts on the ocean and marine biodiversity
* Strong organizational and financial management skills
* Proven ability to engage and collaborate with diverse teams and individuals across various disciplines, cultures and backgrounds to achieve shared goals
* Ability to work well independently and coordinate teams remotely.

Hawaii Policy Analyst and Advocate, Fish Campaign
Food & Water Watch is a leading national consumer advocacy organization that runs dynamic, cutting edge campaigns challenging the corporate control and abuse of our food and water resources. Since 2005, we have won significant victories to protect our food and water. Our work has been featured in the New York Times, the Washington Post and other major media outlets.
We seek a 3-month contract policy analyst and advocate to represent Food & Water Watch and to lead our efforts in Hawaii to protect our ocean resources from reckless expansion of the factory fish farming industry. The policy analyst and advocate will coordinate with DC based staff and work with a diverse set of constituents in Hawaii who care about our oceans, such as recreational fishermen, commercial fisherman, divers, environmental organizations, cultural organizations and the general public.
This position is based in Hawaii; specific location is flexible. Some travel will be required. There is potential for extension of this contract.
Specific Responsibilities
* Work with existing allies and recruit other organizations and individuals to take action for our campaign to protect waters around Hawaii.
* Develop Hawaii-specific outreach materials.
* Work with local media, including organizing press conferences, placing op-eds and radio interviews.
* Plan creative campaign events that may include, town-hall meetings, call-in days, letter-writing campaigns, or others.
* Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
* Education: College degree required.
* Experience: At least 4 years experience in advocacy on public policy issues, and/or grassroots/field organizing, including working with volunteers and the media.
* Knowledge: Familiarity with Hawaiian fishing and/or environmental communities; knowledge of local and/or national marine issues.
* Skills: Excellent written and oral communication skills; strong interpersonal and planning; excellent organizational skills.
