On behalf of Vera Trainer, ISSHA President:
Dear HAB Community.
The abstract deadline for the virtual ICHA2021 conference has been extended to Friday, 7 May 2021. Details on abstract submission can be found here<http://www.icha2020.com/Secciones/contenido/34>. The International Society for the Study of Harmful Algae (ISSHA) Council is busy preparing the meeting with the local steering committee and is excited to announce that we will provide options for live participation in several time zones. Please check frequently for updates at the conference website<http://www.icha2021.com/Secciones/inicio>.
Funding for HAB Early Warning Systems Session

Scientists are encouraged to submit abstracts to present work related to the development, implementation, or operation of Early Warning Systems (EWS) for Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) and to attend a Joint FAO-IAEA-IOC Side Event on Early Warning Systems. This side event on EWS will include presentations and informal discussion with experts to allow participants to further understand the process that has been used to develop, implement and assess the accuracy of EWS.

EWS for HABs have advanced in recent years, allowing competent authorities, coastal managers, shellfish growers, and industries to take appropriate actions to minimize their impacts. HAB microscopic identification and counts are the classic approaches used to assess bloom status, but a variety of new remote sensing methods, using satellites, planes, and in-water sensors for HAB cells and toxins are increasingly being developed to support bloom forecasting and monitoring. Some regions of the world have fully operational EWS, while others are still in development.

Support for participation is available for scientists from United Nations least developed countries<https://unctad.org/topic/least-developed-countries/list> and other low/middle income countries affected by HABs.

EWS awards include support for the registration fee for the virtual ISSHA conference<http://www.icha2021.com/Secciones/inicio> and ISSHA membership<https://issha.org/> for 2 years.

Selection criteria

1. Quality or nature of science of the paper to be presented in an oral presentation. Participants who are first authors will be given higher priority for funding.

2. Priority will be given to first time applicants from low/middle-income countries<https://unctad.org/topic/least-developed-countries/list> over award recipients of past ICHA conferences.

Please submit your application letter as an e-mail attachment to Aurelia Tubaro (tubaro at units.it<mailto:tubaro at units.it>). Please write "ISSHA EWS Awards 2021" as the subject of your e-mail.

The letter should contain the following information:

       a. Name, address, telephone, e-mail

      b. Institutional affiliation and educational status

       c. Research interest (please use keywords)

      d. Desired activity at HAB 2021: Please list EWS Side Session

       e. Copy of the abstract
Applications not submitted correctly may be rejected. The deadline for receipt of applications will be 15th May 2021. Applications will be reviewed by the ISSHA Travel Award Committee and classified according to merits presented. Decisions will be announced by 1 June 2021.

More details will be provided soon on conference side sessions, the schedule to accommodate different time zones, and the popular auction. Please check the ICHA2021 website<http://www.icha2020.com/Secciones/inicio> frequently for updates. Please take some time to submit your abstract and nominate your colleague for a Yasumoto Lifetime Achievement Award or the Patrick Gentien Young Scientist Award<https://issha.org/members-community/awards/>. These award nominations and the ISSHA Student Registration Fee Award<http://www.icha2020.com/Secciones/contenido/63> applications are due on 15th May 2021.
