Maritime Heritage Ecology: A Maritime Archaeologist's Strange Journey into the World of Sessile Organisms, Colonizing Invertebrates, and Unexpected Opportunities for New Research
Shipwrecks are often described as time capsules representing a specific moment in time, but they are also multi-faceted, dynamic databases that offer rich opportunities for understanding historical and ongoing cultural processes. A shipwreck by definition is a cultural intrusion that creates immediate and long-term impacts to a marine ecosystem - from island-like habitats promoting biodiversity to potential polluters of toxic chemicals. They are non-renewable resources that impact contemporary fishing behaviors and ocean management policies. In this presentation, Dr. Calvin Mires will discuss his 25-year career in maritime archaeology and anthropology and how he came to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in the Biology Department to develop the nascent field of Maritime Heritage Ecology with Dr. Kirstin Meyer-Kaiser.
