How Species Spread and Adapt in New Environments: Lessons from Marine Invaders
As marine systems change, marine species must adapt in response to the environments that are shifting around them. In the short term, this may be facilitated by the standing genetic variation already present in a species, which permits a quicker evolutionary response than new mutations. For many marine species, genetic variation is intimately entwined with dispersal, which determines how adaptive variants are distributed across a broad environmental landscape. Dispersal may also play an important role in the evolution of adaptive variation itself, with particular types of genetic variation favored depending on how broadly individuals disperse. I will share some of my lab's work studying rapid spread and adaptation in marine invertebrates, focusing on two highly successful invasive species with very different dispersal strategies.
