Friends, Fam, Donut Fans,

‘Twas the week after Halloween
And all through Woods Hole
Social prospects grew more lean
With the incoming cold

“What will we do?!” the good Falmouth-ians cried
Now that summer is closing
Beaches and bars can’t provide

Sure we could close up, settle down, sleep
Stay in our homes and to ourselves keep
But surely there’s more, some good fun to be had
To make sure short days and long nights are not sad

Then what did they see through autumn’s soft glow
But DONUTS and BIKING and TRAIL RUNS, what ho!

And thus will they gather, this coming Sunday
For the Tour de Donut (aka Giro D’Onut, aka Daydonut 500), come what may
To get out on the trails, and on donuts engorge,
And to see some good friends, and maybe make a few more

That’s right – the hype is real – the second annual Tour de Donut (aka Giro D’Onut, aka Daydonut 500) is THIS SUNDAY, November 5th, from 1 – 5 PM! It’s not too late to RSVP here<https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fforms%2Fd%2Fe%2F1FAIpQLSeQHB8GJndZfXgSdJr6tN4XEF98rRYykIzvGNKh--bO6FaqYQ%2Fviewform%3Fusp%3Dsf_link&data=05%7C01%7Call-postdocs%40whoi.edu%7C627ba376b70c4d015cda08dbdbb4dd95%7Cd44c5cc6d18c46cc8abd4fdf5b6e5944%7C0%7C0%7C638345342089863374%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=76DDRKfVX1SlRO49df9nVH880HiI5OfpXV2oRHgp%2F3o%3D&reserved=0> if you haven’t yet, but you can show up even if you haven’t RSVP’d – we’ll have donuts and trails aplenty. And, new this year, please join us afterwards at the Club Valley Cottage for warm drinks and a backyard fire and maybe even some chili (but you’ll have to come to the TdD to get the house address). Additional details are below! Feel free to send any questions my way at khalloran at whoi.edu<mailto:khalloran at whoi.edu>. Looking forward to seeing y’all there!

Who: You! And literally anybody else. Come, have fun, bring your friends!

What: The Tour de Donut is a biking/running/eating competition, held at Crane WMA. We’ll have two loops set out: one for bikes, one for runners (or walkers, you can do what you want). We’ll also have an whole bunch of donuts. Each lap completed is worth two points; each donut eaten is worth one point. The highest number of points wins. Every competitor must complete at least one lap and eat at least one donut. In addition to the required donut, you may eat as many donuts as you’d like/as you can stomach. You may arrange lap completion and donut eating as you see fit (e.g., you can run then eat, or eat then run, or alternate running and eating). Donuts can be obtained at the start/finish line, and must be eaten there – no running/biking and eating at the same time. You may form teams, you social butterfly you, but it will have no bearing on the results - laps/donuts will be counted and prizes will be awarded on an individual basis. Prizes will be awarded for the top competitor in each of the bike, run, and mixed run+bike categories. All are also welcome to come hang, even if you won’t be competing.

Where: Crane Wildlife Management Area. We’ll be meeting near the Otis Model Aero Club (here<https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgoo.gl%2Fmaps%2F7xvTfMsfjWA553Q79&data=05%7C01%7Call-postdocs%40whoi.edu%7C627ba376b70c4d015cda08dbdbb4dd95%7Cd44c5cc6d18c46cc8abd4fdf5b6e5944%7C0%7C0%7C638345342089863374%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=qE%2BcvnzgqKih7nbIvxdJ1c4kYFjhCcKZkXcafBA5vDw%3D&reserved=0>); to get there you can turn north off Highway 151 at the Allietta Softball Field.

When: Sunday, November 5, 2023, from 1 PM – 5 PM. I’ll give a little hello at 1:10 or 1:15, and racing will start by 1:30 PM. Last laps will start no later than 4:10 PM, and last donuts will start no later than 4:30 PM (cheers to daylight savings for the early sunset). Plan on 2.5-3 hours of racing and eating. If you show up late, you’re still welcome to join – you’ll just have to move faster to get those laps in.

Why: Friends, donuts, fall colors, bikes, trail runs, fun, big dumb chaotic energy

Routes: We’ll have the routes marked out on site, and some printed maps available. The running route is ~1.6 miles; the bike route is ~3.8 miles. Both routes will be on nontechnical trails. Any given gravel or mountain bike should be able to handle the bike course, though you may have to get off to push through sand for short stretches. gpx files for both the running and bike route are attached, or you can check the routes out on Google maps (running<https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Fmaps%2Fd%2Fedit%3Fmid%3D1hlfidVM2uu0y1kweikc78DAQR5xnV-k%26ll%3D41.63540136456176%252C-70.55558649999999%26z%3D16&data=05%7C01%7Call-postdocs%40whoi.edu%7C627ba376b70c4d015cda08dbdbb4dd95%7Cd44c5cc6d18c46cc8abd4fdf5b6e5944%7C0%7C0%7C638345342089863374%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=dxeIXD1rk7iC%2FZZbS1asSDkinke7OQmyzs73CqTcJ8U%3D&reserved=0>, biking<https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Fmaps%2Fd%2Fedit%3Fmid%3D1_KytzzATuE0rrPQEkzc-IHEIfA2KsKs%26ll%3D41.63810944599832%252C-70.5708245%26z%3D15&data=05%7C01%7Call-postdocs%40whoi.edu%7C627ba376b70c4d015cda08dbdbb4dd95%7Cd44c5cc6d18c46cc8abd4fdf5b6e5944%7C0%7C0%7C638345342089863374%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=lI1bUDpHu6NRX8%2FwI3gvzgefFthK59ShA9psh%2BzC2dg%3D&reserved=0>) or Strava (running<https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.strava.com%2Froutes%2F3155022403883368832&data=05%7C01%7Call-postdocs%40whoi.edu%7C627ba376b70c4d015cda08dbdbb4dd95%7Cd44c5cc6d18c46cc8abd4fdf5b6e5944%7C0%7C0%7C638345342089863374%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=svy07hEe1D9%2FPhURBVfi2awBOiIJQCBK87xSYdMLJJk%3D&reserved=0>, biking<https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.strava.com%2Froutes%2F3024382016450133334&data=05%7C01%7Call-postdocs%40whoi.edu%7C627ba376b70c4d015cda08dbdbb4dd95%7Cd44c5cc6d18c46cc8abd4fdf5b6e5944%7C0%7C0%7C638345342089863374%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=PGf6fWzwlyF9VfDAr2k3tcRPW0viN2az8jB8qMdZzik%3D&reserved=0>). Holler if you have trouble accessing those links!

Donuts: We’ll have an unholy number of apple cider donuts. Options will be available for vegan and gluten free competitors.

What to bring: Yourself! Friends! Water! A bike, if you’d like! You may also want to bring sunscreen and/or bug spray. We’ll have some water jugs, but not many cups - please bring a water bottle.

Other logistics: No hunting is allowed at Crane on Sundays (phew!), but it’s an open course (and a very unofficial event!), so you might encounter other folks enjoying the area. Please be respectful of other people and keep your eyes up to avoid collisions. There are no bathrooms at Crane; there is typically a porta-potty at the Allietta Softball Field, but I haven’t checked to see what kind of shape it’s in. Plan accordingly!

Afterparty: If you’re feeling up to it, please join us after the TdD (aka G D’O, aka D500) for food, drinks, and a backyard fire. Come race (or just hang out at Crane) to get the address!

Looking forward to it, and looking forward to seeing y’all there!

Cheers,
Katie
