Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
Biology Department Seminar
Thursday, November 2, 2023 - 12:00 Noon

Avery Paxton
Research Marine Biologist, NOAA

Built Marine Structures for Coastal Species and Habitat Resilience
Built structures, such as hardened shorelines, artificial reefs, and wind turbine foundations, are increasingly common seascape features. During this seminar, we'll use observations from scientific diving, remotely-operated vehicles, and sonar imaging to examine how built marine infrastructure functions as habitat for marine life, including reef fish and large predators. We'll then discuss how intentional design and siting of built marine infrastructure can help generate critical ecosystem services and potentially benefit both nature and people.
