There will be an in-person seminar by Anela Choy from Scripps on June 16th (this Friday) – note that this is not Thursday. This seminar will NOT be recorded or broadcasted by zoom, so I highly encourage people to attend in-person at the Redfield auditorium. I believe many of us would be very interested in her multidisciplinary approaches to study the trophic connectivity of species in the deep oceans. Vertical Food Web Connectivity Across Deep-Pelagic Ecosystems
The deep oceanic water column is Earth’s largest living space. Diverse, understudied assemblages of animals inhabit epipelagic, mesopelagic, and bathypelagic depths and form complex food webs that stretch across distant depth horizons, driving energy flow and large-scale biogeochemical cycling in the sea. I will present discoveries on the structure and function of these food webs, gathered with a diversity of approaches in the field (in situ observations, ROVs, trawls) and in the lab (gut contents, biochemical trophic tracers). I also present evidence of anthropogenic change impacting deep-pelagic ecosystems, which are critical for sustaining healthy fisheries, climate regulation, and global ecosystem services.
