Climate-related change affects coastal Antarctic benthic biodiversity and ecosystem function
Dr. Drew Lohrer
National Institute of Water & Atmospheric Research (NIWA), Hamilton, New Zealand
Polar seafloor ecosystems are changing rapidly and dramatically. Warming related declines in polar sea ice are expected to alter fluxes of phytoplankton and under-ice algae to the seafloor. Yet how changes in food flux cascade through to seafloor communities and functions has remained unclear. This talk will provide an overview of our research in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, and how we leveraged spatial gradients and recent reductions in summertime sea ice extent to test predictions of climate-related temporal change. Increases in seafloor sediment algal pigment concentrations were recorded at three contrasting coastal sites following a series of Sound-wide sea ice breakouts. Corresponding changes in seafloor ecosystem metabolism, invertebrate abundance and macrofaunal community structure were detected. Characteristics of food poor sites shifted towards those of richer sites at a surprisingly fast pace, shedding light on Antarctic marine trophic cascades and the responses of iconic high latitude seafloor habitats to a warming climate.
