Social evolution in coral reef fishes

A major transition in the evolution of life was animals beginning to
live in groups. Complex societies, where some individuals forgo
reproduction, have been a focus of evolutionary ecology ever since
Darwin pointed out the difficulties they pose for his theory of natural
selection. Since Hamilton’s pivotal insight about kin selection, the
field of social evolution has made significant advances in explaining
eusocial societies in insects, and cooperative breeding in birds and
mammals. Relatively few studies have attempted to explain similar
societies in fishes, and marine fishes in particular have been
overlooked. However, two species of coral reef fish with complex
societies have emerged as potential model organisms in the past two
decades: the clown anemonefish Amphiprion percula and the emerald coral
goby Paragobiodon xanthosoma. My research focuses on using these species
to test the robustness of current theories, generate new insights, and
advance the field of social evolution. In this talk I will speak about
the potential for kin selection in marine fishes with dispersive larval
phases, what other mechanisms may be operating instead of/alongside kin
selection, and what role mutualistic cnidarians (corals and anemones)
may play in the evolution of coral reef fish social systems.
