          style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Arial;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">A major transition in the evolution of life was animals beginning to live in groups. Complex societies, where some individuals forgo reproduction, have been a focus of evolutionary ecology ever since Darwin pointed out the difficulties they pose for his theory of natural selection. Since Hamilton’s pivotal insight about kin selection, the field of social evolution has made significant advances in explaining eusocial societies in insects, and cooperative breeding in birds and mammals. Relatively few studies have attempted to explain similar societies in fishes, and marine fishes in particular have been overlooked. However, two species of coral reef fish with complex societies have emerged as potential model organisms in the past two decades: the clown anemonefish Amphiprion percula and the emerald coral goby Paragobiodon xanthosoma. My research focuses on using these species to test the robustness of current theories, generate new insights, and advance the field of social evolution. In this talk I will speak about the potential for kin selection in marine fishes with dispersive larval phases, what other mechanisms may be operating instead of/alongside kin selection, and what role mutualistic cnidarians (corals and anemones) may play in the evolution of coral reef fish social systems.</span></p>
