Phytoplankton community determinations and dynamics in the Santa Barbara
Channel, California

Phytoplankton community composition determines the fate(s) of
phytoplankton production in the ocean, necessitating an improved
understanding of large-scale phytoplankton community variations. Here, I
present results from my PhD research where I integrated large
bio-optical, biomarker pigment, and DNA meta-barcoding data sets to
characterize phytoplankton community composition (PCC) and determine the
dominant oceanographic and climate forcings of PCC variability in the
Santa Barbara Channel, CA (SBC). I develop a novel bio-optical modeling
approach to retrieve phytoplankton “pigment communities,” a proxy for
PCC, from hyperspectral bio-optical observations. The models are applied
to an archive of bio-optical observations to double the size of an
existing phytoplankton biomarker pigment time series and assess the
oceanographic and climate forcings of PCC in the SBC, leading to the
development of a hypothesis that links decadal dinoflagellate blooms to
decadal climate forcings and variability in regional circulation
patterns. Integrating DNA meta-barcoding with pigment observations
refines our proposed phytoplankton pigment community framework and
suggests integrating high-throughput PCC methods can provide novel
insights into the physiology and ecology of phytoplankton groups.
Finally, I preview some preliminary results from my time at WHOI so far
integrating large plankton image and DNA sequencing data sets to
understand diatom-parasite interactions in the coastal ocean.
