As the NIH's first Chief Officer for Scientific Workforce Diversity, Dr.
Valantine will describe NIH’s current approach and activities related to
promoting inclusive excellence by fostering workforce diversity. She
will frame her presentation in the context of two colliding pandemics –
COVID-19 and structural racism, highlighting the diversity and inclusion
challenges facing biomedicine.
Dr. Valantine is the NIH’s first Chief Officer for Scientific Workforce
Diversity and is a Senior Investigator in the Intramural Research
Program at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Prior to
starting this position in 2014, she was Professor of Cardiovascular
Medicine and the Senior Associate Dean for Diversity and Leadership at
Stanford University.
In addition to her nationally recognized work in developing and
implementing transformative approaches to diversity in academic
medicine, Dr. Valantine has had a prestigious career in cardiology. She
maintains an active clinical research program at the NIH that continues
to have high impact on patient care.
Dr. Valantine studied biochemistry at London University and attended St.
George’s Hospital Medical School. She completed her post-graduate work
in the field of cardiology in London and later trained as a fellow at
Stanford University with leading cardiologists and cardiac surgeons,
including heart transplant pioneer Norman Shumway. Dr. Valantine has
received numerous awards throughout her career including the NIH
Director’s Pathfinder Award for Diversity in the Scientific Workforce
and Best Doctor in America.
