Oceanography

Fronts implicated as the missing mechanism driving phytoplankton
variability in the iron-limited subarctic NE Pacific

Despite being an ocean region where productivity is limited by a lack
of iron, the offshore subarctic NE Pacific is important to the ocean’s
uptake of atmospheric carbon dioxide through biological processes. It
is also the location of a long running time series program (Line P),
where observations are thought to represent the surrounding area. This
region has historically been characterized as having low and invariant
chlorophyll concentrations, suggesting little variability in carbon
cycling. Here we challenge this assumption, showing instead that
chlorophyll has structure on mesoscales using shipboard sampling,
satellite, and model output. Higher chlorophyll concentrations are
associated with elevated productivity and carbon export rates. This
elevated productivity water also shows phytoplankton species shifts,
supporting iron inputs. We hypothesize the mechanism for introducing
iron into surface waters is offshore fronts (defined here as 1°C
change in temperature over a 1/3 degree distance) and can explain
variability throughout the iron-limited region. Such a mechanism has
important implications for how observations at the time series are
used to understand the wider region.
