Also Kelley Bright (Shannon Point Marine Center) report yesterday: Guemes
Channel water sample. It is full of healthy growing mixed diatoms. Lots of
different Chaetoceros, Thalassiosira, and Skeletonema. They look very
healthy and are being actively grazed by large dinoflagellates and probably
the large ciliates in there too

Gabriela Hannach looked briefly at the phytoplankton samples from last week
(I think collected on May 9th) from off Point Jefferson and in East Passage
and she saw a lot of Chaetoceros and Skeletonema.

Our next sample collection isn't scheduled until the 21st (Point Jefferson)
and 22nd (East Passage).

We are experiencing similar large blooms in Penn Cove.

Thanks Christopher for the images and notice.

I checked with Scott Ridgeway at American Gold Seafoods at the commercial
dock near Fort Ward State Park on Bainbridge Island. He says they sampled it
today and found a large variety of diatoms (Nitzchia, Thalassiosira,
Leptocylindrus, Chaetoceros spp.) plus some dinoflagelleates
(Protoperidinium) and quite a few Noctiluca flagellates that would help
explain some of the color but not orangish red, tomato soup color as it
occurs when highly dominant. Scott and Rick Safford have been identifying
phytoplankton there for about 20 years (after being trained by Rita Horner)
and thus are very experienced. They did not sample far inside near Port
Orchard or Brownsville today, but I trust they will soon if the weather
continues to be warm.

All the best,

Jack

We just returned from a EOPS flight over Dana Passage, Carr Inlet, Central
Basin (3 PM) and I have not seen a (diatom?) bloom this intense since we
have been flying in Central Sound.
